Need a Search Folder for "selected hard drives", not "all" hard dr

 

There is a "folder" in my system that is used by "Search".

It contains "all" 10 of my hard drives, i.e. "

C:;D:;E:;F:;G:;H:;I:;J:;M:;N: "

How can I make another "folder" for Search that has just the " D:;E:;M: "

drives,

or the " C:;H:;I:;N: " drives ?

Not 100% sure I understand your question but if you're just seeking to search a selected drive or folder then just right click on that drive or folder and select the search option.

OK, I will elaborate to better describe what I want. Here are the facts.

 

a. My system has 10 hard drives, lettered C:;D:;E:;F:;G:;H:;I:;J:;M:;N:

 

b. The XP Search function gives me these optional places to """Look in"""

1. Local Hard Drives C:;D:;E:;F:;G:;H:;I:;J:;M:;N:

2. My Documents

3. Shared Documents

4. 3 1/2" Floppy A:

5. HIT80GB-C (C:)

6. HIT80GB-D (D:)

7. HIT80GB-E (E:)

8. HIT80GB-F (F:)

9. HIT80GB-G (G:)

10. HIT80GB-H (H:)

11. HIT80GB-I (I:)

12. HIT80GB-J (J:)

13. DVD-RW Drive (K:)

14. CD-Drive (L:)

15. M-XCAT80G-M (M:)

16. N-VID60GB-N (N:)

 

With these options I can seach any individual hard drive,

or I can search -all- hard drives.

 

I want to search more than one, but not all, hard drives.

 

I want to be able to create a "folder" of drives.

It will be like the "Local Hard Drives C:;D:;E:;F:;G:;H:;I:;J:;M:;N:",

but it will have, for example, "Local Hard Drives F:;I:;M:;N:"

 

How do I create a search list "folder" for Search that has

"Local Hard Drives F:;I:;M:;N:", or

"Local Hard Drives E:;H:;J", or

"Local Hard Drives D:;E:;F:;G:;H:;N:"

so that I can search more than one, but not all, hard drives ? ? ?

ok - got you now ......

 

go to search, select advanced.

from the location pulldown list choose search locations - it will give you a checklist to choose which drives to search.

Sorry - hit wrong button before I'd finished! When the search is complete you can save the search paramters as a virtual folder for future searches - click on "save search" giving the folder an appropriate name like "search drives D, F and K".

Let me be perfectly clear here. Ib think that you still don't understand my

question.

 

Now,

in the Windows Explorer "Search Companion" Explorer Bar on the left side of

gthe Explorer window, there IS A LIST of THESE ITEMS -

Look in: ( does have a pull down list which

lists these sixteen (16) items)

Now, please read this next sentence S L O W L Y so that I can get my

question across to you.

 

With these given sixteen (16) options I can seach ANY ONE SINGLE (1)

INDIVIDUAL HARD DRIVE

 

OR,

 

I can search -ALL- LOCAL HARD DRIVES C:;D:;E:;F:;G:;H:;I:;J:;M:;N:

 

BUT, BUT, I want to search MORE THAN ONE, BUT NOT ALL, hard drives.

I think I understand your question, I think you don't understand my reply! :D

 

Not sure if you can put pics in this forum - I'll try:

 

1. Goto "start" and "search".

 

2. Select "advanced search".

 

3. Where it says "location", pull down the list and the very last entry says "Choose search locations" - select that.

 

4. Click on "computer" to list all your drives and select the ones you want to search.

 

5. Click on ok.

 

6. Select any other search parameters you want to specify (eg: filename, type etc) then click on "search".

 

7. You can save the search - click on "save search" and select the name and location of the file - you car instance save something called "search drives D F and K for jpgs" on the desktop.

 

* Can't see how to insert a pic but hopefully this is getting us nearer to being on the same planet. What's the old saying? I think we meant what we thought we said but I don't think we said what we thought we meant - something like that.:D

it's a newsgroup.not a forum.

what OS are you using?! Vista?

 

In win xp the list of locations ends in 'browse'. The option you speak

of isn't there.

I have never seen any option in my Windows XP Pro with SP2 and all updates

system that says "Choose search locations".

 

Please tell me how to add the "Choose Search Locations" to my Windows XP Pro

This is actually simple, and shouldn't have required all this

verbosity.

 

In the "Look in:" field simply type the drive letters to search

separating each with a semi-colon. You must use the proper syntax. You

can save the search for future use.

 

EXAMPLE:

 

Let's say I have 6 drives in my system, but only want to search on

Drives D: and E:. I would use the following syntax in the "Look in:"

field to limit my search to those two drives:

 

D:\;E:\

 

This works for me in XP Pro SP2. MS says the backslash is optional

when searching a whole drive, but I always include it. You can use this

same syntax to search selected folders on selected drives. For

example:

 

C:\downloads;F:\downloads;G:\downloads

 

If you think you'll use these drive or folder parameters in the future,

simply click the file menu on the search window, and select "save

search". Give it a descriptive name and click OK. Your saved searches

will appear at the bottom of the "Look in:" drive list under a heading

called "browse".
