Lost Useful Program

My grandson recently had to format and restore his Windows XP Home Edition.

(The pc was caught up in a startup loop)

He had a program that was very useful to check on the pc's systems

(motherboard, drives, etc.)

I have seen this program, and it did look to be a very sophistacated and

useful check program.

He didn't backup any info before he formated.

He wasn't sure if the program was a freeware, shareware, or possibly one he

had purchased online.

He seems sure it was a program he had downloaded from the internet.

The program was " PC Doctor for Windows ".

I have searched everywhere trying to locate any such program on the internet.

Have any of you heard of this program or know where it can be found ???

I would sure appreciate any help anyone can give so I can help him get back

up and running with that program.

Thanks

Go to http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html and download Belarc Advisor.

This is the best I know of for what you are looking for.

Then you didn't read his whole post. He NAMED the program he was

looking for and it wasn't Belarc Advisor.

Well this very usefull program was no use when a problem occured

These type of usefull programs are at best of dubious usefullness and at

worst no better than a virus, specially in the hands of the uninitiated

"Everywhere"? Where and how did you search? I simply cut and pasted

the words PC Doctor for Windows in your message above into Google. The

first hit was for

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-52871.html

which appears to be the program you are talking about.

Note, however, that this product supports specific computers only

(listed on the web site). What it might do with some other computers,

I have no idea.

There's very little information about the product on the site, but in

general I am *very* suspicious of all such products that bill

themselves as magical panaceas to find and fix all your problems.

Re: Lost Useful Program

I have found from the PC-Doctor web site and the download of PCDoctor5

that the program is licensed to companies that build PC's, and not to any individual.

You will have to contact the company that built the PC to get information about how to get a license to use the program. It appears that first the license must be installed, and then the program can be installed. I can't find any way around that.

Good luck !

PC Doctor for Windows is installed by the OEM that set up the computer.

Your grandson should check with the software CD's he has for the computer to

see if it's on one of those or go to the computer manufacturer's tech

support site to find it. On a side note, I don't think it's all that

sophisticated or helpful. There are plenty of tools available that will

give the same information.

RE: Lost Useful Program

Thanks to all that responded ... and points well taken.

The site ...

PC-Doctor for Windows - Desktops / Notebooks

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-52871.html

seems to be the one, but after downloading and trying to run, I keep getting

and error message:

"License Agreement"

"This version of PC-Doctor 5 for Windows is not licensed to run on this

system."

This has me puzzled ... I'm using the Windows XP Home Edition and

everything is up to date. I've tried uninstall and install a few times and

get the same reply.

Any idea as to what the problem may be and as to if there is a possible

workaround?

Again, thanks to all who responded.

The message "not licensed to run on this system" is referring to the

hardware system, not the software (Windows) one. It's apparently for

an IBM computer, perhaps even a specific IBM computer, and you are

apparently trying to run it on a different one.

RE: Lost Useful Program

Hi,

First of all you are welcome, secondly since you mentioned in your first

post that this a clean installation (hence format HDD), do you install the

motherboard Drivers or gone to the Motherboard manufacturer to download the

Drivers for the motherboard Specs?.

Here are some links and read the FAQ from PC-Doctor site:

<Quote::> from the above link:

Answer: To find and edit the CLASSPATH variable, follow these steps:

1. Open the Control Panel. This can be found in the Start Menu. Double

click on the System icon; this should open the "System Properties" dialog.

2. Select the Advanced tab; at the very bottom of the tab will be an

"Environment Variables" button.

3. Click on the "Environment Variables" button to open the "Environment

Variables" dialog.

4. Look for the CLASSPATH variable in the "System Variables" frame.

Select the CLASSPATH variable and click on the Edit button; an "Edit System

Variable" window will open.

5. Edit the variable value by adding a semicolon at the end of the line.

The value should be something like this before you edit it: C:\Program

Files\Java\j2re1.4.2\lib\ext\QTJava.zip. It will look like this after you

edit it: C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2\lib\ext\QTJava.zip;

6. Select "OK" in the "Edit System Variable" dialog.

7. Select "OK" in the "Environment Variables" dialog.

8. Select "OK" in the "System Properties" dialog.

9. Now attempt to run your PC-Doctor product again.

Re: Lost Useful Program

Hey Ken,

I talked with him about all of this, and he says he is having some external

drive issues, and that the program addressed each drive, its contents, error

sites, etc.

He told me (and I tried myself) the address given by Google does the exact

same thing.

He says it was running fine before he reformatted his main drive.

Have you tried to download and run the program site ?

Does it install and present a working program ?

I've tried it over and over, and get the same message.

Thanks for any help ----

No, I haven't tried. I have no interest in programs like this, and

distrust them all.

Sorry, I don't have any more information for you.
