Unable to access Windows Update site.

I had a problem with .net framework which I finally reloaded and got to work.

I tried to go out to the Windows Update site and I get the message " Thank

you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site. This site is

designed to work with Microsoft Windows.........."

I am running Windows XP, SP2, with all current updates as of July, 2007.

I can get to the net and other Microsoft sites with no problem. I have no

other problems that I am aware of and all my programs seem to be working

properly.

What is the Update site looking for when you go out to retrieve updates?

Can I have a corrupted file I am not aware of?

RE: Unable to access Windows Update site.

Actually windows update is somwhat retired, the replacement is now "microsoft

update".To get the software,go to microsoft.com,select downloads,select

microsoft update. Also, after SP2 is installed, one should open internet

options,

settings,view objects,R.click on each (one @ a time),select,update.....

Re: Unable to access Windows Update site.

I tried all on the winhelponline .com article. Did not improve. Still can't

get to the update site. I show mozilla/4.0 (compatible; msie 6.0) in the

java script. I do not have the firewall on and even when I did, I was able

to get to the Windows Update site with out any problems in the past. Still

seems like there is something being passed to the update site that makes the

site think I am NOT an XP user.

I did receive auto update notification today and was able to download and

install everything that way, but I would like to go out to the update site

and check for other than critical updates.

Any suggestions and/or additional help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Sorry that I have nothing constructive to add, but I am having this

same problem. I had accidentally deleted a Windows File needed during

startup and was told to repair the installation with my WinXP MCE

disc. The repair was successful but the older files (I had the latest

from Windows Update before) downgraded and ruined much of my system. I

had to repair .NET 2.0, I separately installed IE7 and a few other

upgrades but without access to the update site, I'm stuck with a

relatively broken, bleeding system. I've tried the above remedies,

found the keys didn't exist and the old Update software just jumped

right to v6 so here I am. If I find something I'll be sure to post but

ANY help would be appreciated, and I'm pretty sure I speak for both of

us.

(And as a note "Windows Update" is actually out of date for newer

users of as XP or Vista, but I'm pretty sure that "Microsoft Update"

and "Windows Update" remain interchangeable... lets not make it

anymore confusing. )

Re: Unable to access Windows Update site.

Initiate a manual visit to Windows Update. If the system still cannot

access it, open the WindowsUpdate.log and post the last 40 or so lines

of it into your reply, please.

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Click OK or press Enter

Re: Unable to access Windows Update site.

Make sure internet explorer is your default browser

to set default browser

Click Start- Click Run - > type inetcpl.cpl and click ok

We will get internet options open

go to programs tab

check the option which says 'Interner Explorer Should check if it is default

browser '

then try to access windows update

----

If still having any problems

then refer 818018 kb

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818018

----

if issue persists

then try to run the following commands from command prompt

(to open the command prompt - > start- > run - > type cmd click ok)

1) NET STOP BITS

2) NET STOP WUAUSERV

3) NET STOP CRYPTSVC

4) REN C:\WINDOWS\SOFTWAREDISTRIBUTION SD1

5) REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CatRoot2 CR2

6) NET START BITS

7) NET START WUAUSERV

8) NET START CRYPTSVC

Register the dll files :

----------------------

Go to start -> run -> cmd

1) REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL

2) REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL

3) REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL

4) REGSVR32 WUAUSERV.DLL

5) REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL

6) REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL

7) REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

Hopefully these steps will resolve the issue with updates.

Lets c, let me know the status .

Re: Unable to access Windows Update site.

I folled your instructions and I received an error on the REN:C\.... commands

so I renamed within explorer. Error came back from the run command as

cammand not found. the other error I encountered was on the regsvr32

wuauserv.dll gave me the following error:

Was loaded, but the dll register server entry point was not found. File

cannnot be registered.

Still cannot access windows update site. There are no entries in the

%windir%\windowsupdate.log except for auto updates.

Do I have a bad DLL? Can I reload Windows Update Agent? Do I have to

remove the old one first?

Thanks so much for the your help. You guys are great.

Re: Unable to access Windows Update site.

Check the windows update log. Only entries in there are automatic update

checks.

I even tried the things that Rajesh suggested. Please see my reply to him.

Thanks so much for your help and I'm still open for suggestions.

There's more information in the WU log besides what you've indicated,

Re: Unable to access Windows Update site.

You can download and *SAVE* the latest version of the Windows Update

Agent from the link on this page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494

It's under " x86-based versions of Windows "

ALSO, download and save KB927891:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A&displaylang=en

When the downloads complete, close the browser and any other open programs.

Stop the Automatic Updates service by going to Start > Run > type in

net stop wuauserv

Click OK or press Enter

Install WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe first

Install WindowsXP-KB927891-v3-x86-ENU.exe and then restart the system

Oerks, what's that "TaxWise" bloat in the User-Agent?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817144 - "Method 4" should help.

Look under File Information on the below web page for x86 -based Windows

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494

OUCH. Just checked that list and it's way too much information for the

Average User. Fastest way to determine if WUA 3.0 has installed is to

either check the WindowsUpdate.log

*FIRST*, open Internet Explorer, click Tools, Windows Updates

After the system has been scanned by WU, close Internet Explorer

Now go to Start > Run > type in

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Click OK or press Enter

Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the log

There should be an entry that looks like this:

2007-05-17 16:03:28:243 2916 b68 Misc =========== Logging initialized

(build: 7.0.6000.374, tz: -0700) ===========

2007-05-17 16:03:28:243 2916 b68 Misc = Process: D:\Program

Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE

2007-05-17 16:03:28:243 2916 b68 Misc = Module:

D:\WINDOWS\system32\wuweb.dll

> build: 7.0.6000.374

The above shows that WUA 3.0 is installed

You can also check the wuaengine.dll Version number by showing hidden

files, folders, and system files:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp

Then, using Windows Explorer, navigate to the WINDOWS\system32 subfolder

Locate wuaengine.dll, right click it, choose Properties, click the

Version tab.

It should be at V. 7.0.6000.374

To confirm KB927891 has installed, locate Msi31.dll, which *should also*

be located in WINDOWS\system32. It will now be at Version 3.1.4000.4039.

[i've never had to install KB927891 as none of my systems have

experienced lockups as described by the KB article]

Re: Unable to access Windows Update site.

Taxwise is a federal tax preparation program. I have always been able to get

to Microsoft Windows Update with program on my system. The problem started

after reloading .Net V2 due to a problem installing the latest security

update for V2.

Been there and done that with otion four (4). Doesn't help.

Re: Unable to access Windows Update site.

I got to loking at what you told me about option four. I went back into

regedit and checked again under

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\microsoft\currentversion\internet settings and

there is also a user agent under internet setting besides the one under 5.0.

This is where all the taxwise notations were coming from.

I reloaded taxwise when I had problems with .net. I have two other years of

this program on my machine and never had this problem. I don't know why this

registered this time.

I removed all the notations after exporting them and windows update works

again.

Thanks for your assistance and time. You people are great!
