Guest Stupot Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Hi a friends computer wouldn't reboot. After Chkdsk removed error she now gets the message windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupted. She has a dell computer with no CD. I think her system is one of those that has a partition with the files for brining the computer back to factory state. we want to try and retrieve the damaged system without doing that.

It is completely possible to retrieve data on a system that can't boot into Windows (as long as the hard drive is physically viable). Use a Bart's PE or Knoppix rescue disk. http://www.knoppix.net http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ - Bart's PE Builder Then you could try a Repair Install but you will need a Dell XP CD that matches your friend's version of installed XP. A professional computer repair shop should have one. It is going to be impossible to effect repairs without an installation CD. Once your friend has backed up her data, she may decide it is quicker, cheaper, easier to just restore the computer to factory condition. Standard caveat: If you and/or your friend do not have the computer skills to do any of the above, take the machine to a professional computer repair shop. This will not be your local version of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad. Get recommendations from family, friends, and colleagues. Guest Stupot Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Re: Missing or corrupted No it won't boot at all. As soon as the bios information disappears the error message pops up. Guest Stupot Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Re: Missing or corrupted Thanks for the help. I thought there was a way to do this. I will try and contact my friend to see if I can prevent her from having the os re-installed.
