sorry it took so long to reply,

i was running tests on my system,

i plugged in old speakers and the right speaker didn't work either,

so it is the right audio channel that's not available, not sure but as Wolfeymole indicated it most certainly has to do with my motherboard and it's lack of support for the XP sp2 OS

i would have upgraded to sp3 but been hearing lots of problems with AMD systems and sp3,

not sure if adding a sound card like blaster would fix the problem,

it is puzzling, how can i hear audio from the left channel but not the right? lol

Posted
Did the right channel ever work? If not, then you might be using the wrong connector. I can't image that a modern day PC would employ separate mono jacks for right and left channel, but if you plug a stereo speaker set into a mono speaker jack, sound would come from only the left speaker. This is because a mono jack doesn't have the second ring which is what the right channel uses.

Nothing would surprise me on that board Tony but he maintains the speaker jack plug is stereo.

If that board supports mono sound only then well...................:(

Thank you

hi again,

i'm pretty sure the speaker connector is stereo, yesterday i connected the speakers to a laptop and they worked beautifully, rich clear audio on both channels,

this is the full speaker specifications it's in PDF format, it states it's stereo http://www.alteclansing.com/images/spec/VS2420_SELL_SHEET.pdf

but yes it has to be my motherboard, i've been researching it and lots of people been reporting issues with compatibility with XP

with your immense help we've exhausted pretty much every possibility, unless the foxconn board manufacturer's release XP compatibility fixes i don't think much else can be done, not even a sound card would help if the motherboard is at fault,

regardless....

my enormous gratitude for the way in which you tried to help with my malfunctioning motherboard, and i'll resign to audio on the left channel for the mean time, until i invest in a new system,

many thanks

Hi Kikouno

Right, have you uninstalled the audio drivers in add/remove programs -

I would not recommend getting Nforce drivers from NVIDIA as they can lead to some major problems - get them from the MOBO manufacturer.

(only the other day I was saying the opposite for GPU's :D)

Anyway, if you remove the audio drivers and reboot windows it should pick them up.

I am a bit confused from reading some of the other posts - this is onboard and not an add in card??

IF you run a seperate card you HAVE to make sure you disable the onboard in the BIOS or this again will give problems -

It's definitely onboard Dave and he was thinking of getting a card.

ok np.

I would recommend getting an add in card if you use the PC for games and movies as they are much better and higher quality.

The Creative Soundblaster X-FI Extreme Gamer is the best one to get for games and movies and you can pick an OEM one for around £40 I think ;)

Hi,

this problem is just dragging on and on, i gave up on the issue that's been going on for the past 4 pages, there is nothing i can do, the best advice the motherboard manufacturers (foxconn) gave was to update the AC97 drivers (LOL) and if it doesn't work to take it to my mobo dealer (LOLx2)

I have been going through all the possible feasible solutions given here by the experts and elimination processes,

the cause is either the motherboard/compatibility issues or the mobo back audio connectors damaged,

I had an idea to try to connect the speakers to the front audio (never had used it before) but i noticed the front audio pins are not connected to the motherboard, which is strange,

i tried to read up on it, but the motherboard manual is not clear on the order the pins should be connected, i was hoping i could ask your help, .....again

I have included images of the manual, pins, and motherboard

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg153/kikouno01/PC/Faudiopins.jpg

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg153/kikouno01/PC/Faudioconnectors.jpg

it is confusing, some pins have short wires and some long,

and the motherboard manual has different names for the connections

also...on the photo of the motherboard the connectors have two blue plastic bits connected to them, what are they? do i simply remove them when connecting the pins?

Posted

The front audio, I personally never connect they make the pc look untidy and are useless for most people.

The blue bits on the pins look like jumpers to me and they basically create a circuit between the pins.

I'm not certain what's going on here, but I think the jumpers are there to direct the audio to the rear panel jack. You would remove them to use the front panel connector.

those full set of pins are just for the front.

the second picure is also upside down in regards to the pins that the diagram shows

yes, you are right they look like jumpers,

i wouldn't bother with the front-audio either, but my back-audio doesn't seem to be working properly,

considering the front-audio might be my only way of actually being able to get audio from both of my speakers, not just left,

i wouldn't mind enabling front-audio and forgeting about rear-audio completely

Posted
ok then remove the jumpers and follow the instructions on the little sticker for the pins - just make sure you get the ground ones right ;)

yes, i've tried looking at several articles about connecting the front-audio but i am unsure as to the order of the pins should be connected in, the pin labels are so vague and completely different from the manual illustration that i'm left puzzled as how to go about it,

that's why i posted my query here to see if someone has faced a similar dilema and they could share on how they solved it

NOTE: i contacted my mobo manufacturer again (foxconn) requesting instructions but i'm not holding my breath, they still haven't answered, then again they'll just probably thank me again for choosing one of their products and give me no help whatsoever (lol) as expected

After going back and looking at the pictures you posted the right side jumper looks lose - this is common with jumpers that manufacturers now use - I replace all mine with old ones from CDROM drives as they are a much tighter fit - may explain why the rear never worked, until you removed them?

I myself once spent about 2 hours on a pc that kept reposting the BIOS just because of lose jumpers :(

Glad its all sorted :)
