I'm with Virgin Media and connect to the in ternet via ethernet the modem plugs straight into my PC so I don't use a wireless router.

My problem is that I cannot connect to the internet at all. All the lights on the modem are as they should be but when I open Firefox I just get 'server not found'. I've been on the phone to Virgin and they insist that there is something on my PC blocking internet access, but I haven't installed new things or changed any settings whatsoever. I've tried system restore but that didn't work either.

If they are right and the settings have somehow been changed would somebody please tell me what I need to do to reset them?

Many thanks.

Hi decemberboy

Welcome to FPCH

What happens when you try to access Internet Explorer?

The Cable and Power lights should be on all the time and the PC light should flash on and off.

What firewall are you running?

Hi

IE doesn't work either. I've tried pinging some sites and none of them are connecting.

All the lights on the modem are fine although when I do try and connect I notice the send light flashes but the receive doesn't. I use Windows Firewall and have disabled that too but it still won't connect.

Did you add broadband to an existing package or did a guy from Virgin install this?

I'm with Virgin on BB, TV and phone and the guy installed all 3 at the same time and tested the system.

This sounds like a knackered modem to me mate, is it a Scientific Atlanta model?

Are the screw in connections fully tight on the cable?

I was thinking the same thing RE the modem. After me insisting they are sendng me a new modem but still said that it wasn't the modem at fault cos everything was working fine at their end. I was hoping to get it sorted before then cos I don't know how long that will take to get to me.

Yeah the cable is connected correctly, it's the small black modem, not wure what the model is.

Thanks for your help

Do you know anyone who is also on virgin with the same setup?

If they have a working modem and it will work on yours then obviously it's your modem that's goosed.

If it doesn't then we need to look deeper, but as you say it's been working fine up to press.

I sorted it.

I did a clean install of Windows (not ideal solution I know) and everything is working fine again so something muct have been blocking my access. Just got to go through the whole updating procedure.

Thanks again for your help.

Just curious, what version of Windows are you running and what were you using for a Firewall?

Next time you get a problem like this I would look at your Ethernet drivers rather than the PC or firewall - this is a common problem and is easily overlooked.
