Problem opening FTP media files

Hello, I was wondering if you have any solutions on how to open video files from an external drive shared through a router? I open the path in vain, and even though the appropriate (VLC) media player is installed on Windows, when opening the file, Windows says that no application is associated with this file type, and this one called VLC does not even appear in the drop-down list application. And when I go to search for applications from the store, it is interesting that it tries to search for an application for me using the keyword "ftp", not even for mp4 or mkv.
