Are you definitely sure that the cdrom and the hard drive are properly connected?

 

Did you say the cdrom was sata or IDE?

 

If sata the cdrom should be set as first boot option to allow you to install windows then once done so change the boot order to the hard drive.

I have only changed the hdd, and set the cdrom to boot first hence (i believe) the drivers loading but then i'm baffled.

Thanks for advice Kelly, but I have watched the drivers being installed and the sata drivers are there.

 

Did someone install the sata drivers while you were there?

Maybe i'm wrong, but the disc suplied with the pc appears to install the drivers whilst prepering to install windows, i have assumed this, has I say maybe i'm wrong.

This is a bit confusing Dave as you say it appears to install the sata drivers but then say you assume so.

 

Without any operating system installed the bios should see the drive connected, does it at least do this?

Sorry to appear dim but yes the hdd is shown as the third master in bios.

Did you get some kind of floppy disk with the sata drivers on it when you got the pc?

 

If so you need to install that when it asks, do you see a screen like this at any time?

No never seen a screen like that before, the pc only came with 1 disc which appears to have both drivers and windows on it, the pc came with a sata hdd so wouldn't the drivers allready be installed?.

Ok - there is definately an issue with the SATA here I think - do you have the SATA drive plugged into SATA1 on the MOBO?

where the SATA slots are there are numbers printed on the MOBO and make sure that the HDD is plugged into port1 and retry - some boards are fussy and you need to set the specific port to the top in the BIOS - easiest way rather than messing in the BIOS is to plug in port 1.

Hi have checked, and the hdd is connected to port 1 and as far as I can see is conected properly.

ok - do you know how to enter the BIOS - normally says which button when it posts but is normally delete.

enter the BIOS and there will be a list of ports for the HDD's under one of the tabs - not sure which.

do not mistake this for the boot device priority.

There is a seperate section that will list the amount of SATA ports that your MOBO has and you need to manually move yours to the top.

Also do you have the HDD plugged directly into one of the MOLEX's that come off the power supply - as in there are no fans or splitters on the same channel?

if there are fans or splitters attched then please run a MOLEX straight from the PSU to the HDD and retry.

when changing settings in the BIOS always remember to SAVE and EXIT

If you have set the cdrom as the 1st boot option and then try to install windows and the hdd is set properly and the sata drivers are loaded ok and it's still not finding the hdd then the hdd has to be fauty.

The hdd is powered direct from power suppy, and the fans plugged in to the mother board. Sorry but I can't find the the section in bios to set the sata ports. I think my next is to ring the place i bought the hdd from and see if they can test it or replace it to see if it's faulty. I'll let you know how I get on, thanks again for all your help.

The company will probably charge you - if there is nothing wrong with it - do you have any friends/another PC you can plug it into to see if the HDD works on their machine?

Just rang them and there saying it's because the sata drivers arn't installed ( same as you have all said at one point or another )but there was a sata hdd in before, i have only replaced it, and don't know how to install the drivers, or indeed if they are not on the cd suplied with the pc I dont have them.

Right with the MOBO drivers there will be a floppy labelled SATA drivers.

Sometimes they are on the MOBO CD and then its a little more complicated as you need to put them on a floppy

most people now dont even have a floppy drive installed anymore!

I have a floppy drive but only have the recovery disc that came with the pc labled "Recovery cd rom" Windows XP media center version 2005 SP2. Thats the only disc that came with the pc.

Hi, I have downloaded the drivers from the asus website ( hope there the correct ones) but there seams to be a lot of stff there that i'm not sure i need ? and the info state that the os needs to be fully installed first ?

No - they need to be installed prior to the OS - as the drives are newer than the OS and the OS will not recognise the drive.

You just need to add them all to the floppy disk as a BOOT DISK and then when windows is installing its press F6 when needed - you only get about 2-3 seconds to do this or you will miss it and have to redo.

What is the board number and I will check the drivers you have are the right ones.

The board number is P5B TMX/S How do I get the drivers on to a floppy? I only have a Dvd rw on the lap top the floppy drive is on the PC
