Guest Jason Sachs Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Does anyone know the Meaning of the following XP message when attempting to open the "Modem Settings" Icon in the Control Panel? "Modem not installed properly. You should uninstall the modem drivers (using Control panel->Add/Remove programs), restart and install it again.

Yes, it means that the modem, more specifically the modem drivers, aren't installed properly. How do you find this to be unclear? Find its drivers and follow the directions. Some information as to what your modem is and how it's installed in your system might also be helpful. HTH -pk

It means exactly what is written...the modem driver files are probably the wrong ones for the modem. One might wish to re-install them using the driver files that were provided by the modem maker instead of from the Windows XP cdrom or downloaded from Microsoft Updates.

Message is clear as a bell to me - which part don't you understand? Trinny

I am glade to hear that MS error messages mean what they say! The modem, 56K V.90 sporster model produced by US Robotics, is using Drivers provided by Windows XP. The 'Original' from the manufacturer were for Windows 98. The device works successfully in a FAX program manufactured by Smith Micro Software. However, I find that clicking on the 'Modem Settings' of the control panel causes the above message. Also, the Microsoft driver is NOT listed in the ADD/REMOVE Program list! More specifically, how does one perform a reinstall in this case? Thanks, Jason Sachs.

Have you tried the USRobotics support page? http://www.usr.com/support/s-main-menu.asp

Jason: Right click on My Computer. Go to your Device or Hardware Manager (I forget the exact terminology in Windows). If any hardware device is troubling the system, it will be highlighted and delineated in this list. You can install/reinstall there when you get info on that device. You never mentioned whether your modem worked before. If it did, then this procedure could help. If it never did, you do not have the proper drivers and need to uninstall from here anyway. Then go to USR and get the correct installer. You got this far, so I'll assume you're online...!

You got this far, so I'll assume you're online...! > Some additional results and information. I have installed the USR Driver for this modem (USR5686E.inf) as suggested by USR technical support and the modem still works. Additionally, the modem settings icon of the control panel still produces the same error message as before; so I must suggest that the message as produced by Windows XP(HOME) will not correct the issue and is produced erroneously. It is also produced by clicking V.92 icon. The modem is used only for faxing. I connect to the Internet via an ADSL modem. Thanks to every one who replied.
