Guest Rafael Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Hello. I have a Dell Latitude laptop running Windows XP with Service Pack 2. I have broadband and am connected to a wireless network. I am trying to set up a PPTP VPN connection which terminates on a Cisco 831 router - a task which I have completed successfully on many occasions, also with machines running Windows XP Pro, and connecting to the same Cisco 831 router. For this reason, I cannot believe that it is a problem relating to the Cisco 831 router directly, or with port 1723. Each and every time I ty to connect with this particular laptop though, I get the "Error 651 - The modem (or other connecting device) has reported an error." If I change the type of VPN from 'PPTP' to 'Automatic', I receive "Error 800" instead ("Unable to establish the VPN connection. The VPN server may be unreachable..."). I have a second laptop currently on the same wireless network which works perfectly with exactly the same PPTP VPN connection so the problem must be with the laptop itself surely? I have also confirmed that my network will permit multiple outgoing PPTP connections but I receive the error even when there are no other connections in place anyway. >From a great many hours spent scouring the Internet, I can see that this is a known problem but I cannot for the life of me find a solution. I seem to come across many registry cleaners that say they will rid me of these errors - are they worth the money? Is it likely to work? If anyone has any suggestions, I will be eternally grateful as this is driving me insane. Thank you in advance.

Remove/uninstall the Modem and its driver, run disk cleanup an defrag in safe mode, then open this command and type in: sfc /scannow click [OK] you will need the XP CD installation media for this operation to accomplish. <MS::> CAUSE This problem occurs because the Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) tries to create a host route and then detects that the route to the host that was created by the dial-up connection already exists. </MS::> You Receive Error 651 After You Unplug a Modem's USB Cable While the Modem Is Dialing http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824937 FIX: A program cannot re-establish communication with a modem device after the USB cable is quickly reconnected http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822112 http://www.vistax64.com/vista-networking-sharing/42561-vpn-connection-working-now-fails-error-651-a.html VPN Error 651 - Your modem (or other connecting device) has reported an error http://www.chicagotech.net/casestudy/vpnerror651.htm Error 651 Your modem (or other connecting device) has reported an error http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,5721-2513186,00.html HTH. nass --- http://www.nasstec.co.uk
