Guest Gingerbry Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 I seem to have a problem that i only discovered when i wanted to show hidden files. when i open a folder and then go to the tools tab and click it now comes up as map network drive, disconnect network drive and synchronize. this now says to me that somewhere along the line I have probably inadvertantly screwed up and now cannot access some important files. I have also tried going through the control panel and folder options but folder options does not seem to exist. can anyone out there help please??????????

Guest Nightowl Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Re: Hidden files and change of windows Hi Gingerbry Did you try the link Kelly gave you? Or try this one from her site: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Scroll down to line 129 on the left, Restore Folder Options under Tools, and click to download the .reg file to your computer. Then double-click to open the file and click Yes to the import prompt. If neither of those work (even after a reboot) please post back and let us know. Good luck! I don't want to add to your worries but it is looking increasingly likely that some kind of malware is the reason for your problems. Many of them disable registry access and that together with the loss of the Folder Options is suspicious, since that stops you from seeing hidden and system files. MVP Ramesh has a page that explains how to get your registry access back: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/tweakuirest.htm (ignore the references to Tweakui at the beginning, it's the same problem.) Then I'd really strongly urge you to do a thorough scan of your system for any nasties. If you need any help with that, just holler :-) Good luck -- let us know how you get on! -- Nightowl
Guest Gingerbry Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Re: Hidden files and change of windows Hi Kelly and nightowl I applaud you for all your help in my time of need. Nightowl i went on to that last link you gave me and my registry was then fixed, I think whatever caused it was probably long gone as I had installed new virus protection about a couple of months ago and it most likely got rid of it. Anyhoo I can find all my hidden folders now as folder options has turned up in Control Panel Thanks again for all your help it was much appreciated
