Guest SSJ04 Mewtwo Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Someone wanted to change the desktop wallpaper. What I need to know is why during a re-start, the old wallpaper appears just before the desktop loads and then the new wallpaper comes up after all the icons appear. I've also lost the ability to uncheck the checkbox on the web tab on the display properties dialogue box to view the desk as a web page. -- So says the cat

Probably because you are using 'Active Desktop' > I've also > lost the ability to uncheck the checkbox on the web tab on the display > properties dialogue box to view the desk as a web page. If recent, have you tried System Restore? You could also try Safe Mode in an attempt to access and use the dialogue box and/or disable 'Active Desktop' Try the Troubleshooting feature for Active Desktop in Help and Support console. > > -- > So says the cat > > Mart

No expert, just one of "a bunch of senile old cretins" apparently. Have you tried the Tools option on the menu of My Computer (or Windows Explorer) - in Safe Mode, if necessary - to set/reset the Active Desktop utility? You ought to get that fixed asap - it can be very useful - however if this issue is very recent (past five days) then another option may be to run "scanreg /restore" (no quotes and note the space) on the Start | Run menu. BTW - have you done any WinMe updates recently? - Again, do so before they disappear. I thought they invented novocaine (or whatever) for that. Lol! Sarcasm is the best form of verbal humor. Have you tried the Tools option on the menu of My Computer (or Windows Explorer) - in Safe Mode, if necessary - to set/reset the Active Desktop utility? It might give you slightly more flexibility in adjusting your settings. Tried it in normal mode, but no dice. I'll have to get some sited help to do it in safe. You would think that Freedom Scientific would have made JAWS able to run in safe mode. You ought to get that fixed asap - it can be very useful - however if this issue is very recent (past five days) then another option may be to run "scanreg /restore" (no quotes and note the space) on the Start | Run menu. It's very doubtful that this is recent. If the tools menu option doesn't work, then what else can try? BTW - have you done any WinMe updates recently? - Again, do so before they disappear. Not with my connection problems and the problems MS is unwilling to solve with the server taking the user to a message saying that they are running a Mac. If On another display problem, if I were to remove the display driver from device manager would that correct this machine's problem of losing said driver during certain reboots? It doesn't do it every time, but it's getting more frequent. And, would the display driver CD have to be inserted when the PC tries to find the proper driver? -- So says the cat

I thought that MS had fixed the 'Mac' issue - perhaps one of the other regulars might be able to help on that point. I recall that the suggested option was to keep trying until you (eventually) find a server which will let you in. Regarding your Video Driver intermittently being re-detected - from here that could be difficult to talk thru' as it may well require quite a bit of work in Safe Mode to troubleshoot and therefore you are likely to require assistance. > ... And, would the display driver CD have to be > inserted when the PC tries to find the proper driver? Not if you were to copy the driver folder (and associated files) from your CD to a new folder on your hard drive. Then you would only need to direct the driver search to the new folder. and wouldn't need the CD. But you need to find out why your PC keeps needing to re-detect it. Worst case is to find a trustworthy local computer shop. Guest Mike M Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Re: wallpaper question > I thought that MS had fixed the 'Mac' issue It did some months ago. I've just checked again using both a copy of Win Me "out of the box", that is with IE5.5 build 100, and also with a fully updated version running IE6 SP1. Both were able to connect to the Windows Update site without problem with neither being told that the WU site only supported those running Windows. I also checked with an "out of the box" Win98SE (IE5 build 3500) and one running IE6 SP1. Again neither had problems in accessing the WU site. -- Mike Maltby mike.maltby@gmail.com Mart <mart(NoSpam)@nospam.nospam> wrote: > Ah! JAWS (or lack of!) - now I understand. > >> ... There's a folder on the root directory labeled "ATI" which is the driver provider so I'm guessing the files are probably there, and if not, I'll copy them from the CD. Thanks to all who helped. I went to the WU site and it worked on this box as well. -- So says the cat
Guest Mart Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Re: wallpaper question > Thanks to all who helped.... You're welcome > ... I went to the WU site and it worked on this box > as well. That's good news too. It's good to know that (presumably 'all of' ) the Windows Updates for WinMe are still available from the WU site. Now might be a good time to test that System Restore is functioning correctly - the following procedure, courtesy of Mike M :- a) Check.count the number of checkpoints available b) Create a shortcut on your desktop to a file. c) Create a manual checkpoint Could you create a checkpoint? d) Delete the shortcut e) Restore your PC to the checkpoint you created. Was the shortcut restored? Did you see any error messages? How long did the restore take? f) Reboot your PC Was the checkpoint retained? How many checkpoints do you now have? One more than at a) above? Good luck Mart "SSJ04 Mewtwo" <ssj04mewtwo@yahoo.com> wrote in message news:faeir2$jug$1@news.datemas.de... > Mart <mart(NoSpam)@nospam.nospam> > > > Not if you were to copy the driver folder (and associated files) from your > CD to a new folder on your hard drive. Guest Joan Archer Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Re: wallpaper question Do you know what you did to disable it, if so just reverse the process. If this wasn't too long ago have you tried a System Restore to just before you lost it. That's all I can think of at the moment for you to try but I'm sure one of the experts will be along shortly and help you out. Guest Dapper Dan Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Re: wallpaper question Not sure what you mean when you say your desktop feature became disabled. If you are looking to change your desktop image, right click your desktop and select properties, then select the desktop tab. Otherwise go to Control Panel and double click Display and then select the desktop pad. Hope this helps. Guest Greegor Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Re: wallpaper question Just turn OFF the option for Active desktop and set the wallpaper as a background. Much easier and safer than registy restore or system restore isn't it?
