hello everyone i have a slight problem with my external LG GSA-E60N DVD,DVD-DL,DVD-RW,CD-ROM player.

i recently moved home and yesterday after setting my pc back up i came to install Call of Duty 4 on my pc and it just would not read the disc, my first thoughts were that the drive just didnt like the disc, i also had a spare internal dvd drive so i installed that and tried it on there but the same thing happened. i then tried Dawn of war and it did the same thing on both drives.

when i go into my computer it can see that the drives are there and it allows me to open them up but shows nothing in the drive itself like their is no disc in.

it was all working fine before i moved home and now its not .. anybody got any ideas on what i can try and do.

Thank you.

Matt :)

Hi Matt,

Welcome to FPCH

seeing as though none of them are recognising anything - have you changed anything in the system at all since moving the PC?

The external one is USB yes? - when you plug it in (when Windows has booted)

bottom right should do the found new hardware and hardware is ready to use etc, does it do all that?

yeah it does all that when i plug it in when the pc is booted and its connected via usb i have just got anouther usb lead from work to see if that could be an issue but wont be able to tell till tonight.

no major hardware change apart from a new internal dvd drive and that will not read discs neither.

I've tried going going into disc manegement and changeing the external drive from F: to K: and G: etc etc but still nothing worked.

forgot to mention im using XP service pack 2, i could do an upgrade to vista thought if that could cure my problem.

Well the PC is recognisng the devices then, so it's not that:-

can you try and uninstall the devices later and do a reboot and see if it picks them up and asks for drivers, it must be a driver issue - as they open and close just means they are getting power.

And if you right click your dvd drive and select properties, do you have an Autoplay tab? No? Then click Start, Run and enter SERVICES.MSC Scroll down to Shell Hardware Detection and make sure this service is Started and set to Automatic. ;)

It could be that both drives are not working. See if you can open a DVD.

nope, none of the above worked for me.

I couldnt even get windows vista to run from boot?

that tells me the drives are dead.

Thank you to everyone for your help. :)

It is strange for them both to go at the exact same time - try them in another PC first as it could be the MOBO

I hope not its less than 6 months old.:)

I will be able to get hold of anouther dvd drive tonight from my neighbour so i will be able to tell if it is the motherboard.

if that workds then that does mean that both of them drives are dead.

Thx.

If his works then thats great but it doesn't mean yours are dead if they are being powered as in the drawers opening then they are working but for some reason windows is not fully picking them up - have you tried setting the autorun options yet?

This should get the drives up and running:

1.Click Starthttp://support.microsoft.com/library/images/support/kbgraphics/Public/EN-US/VistaStartButton.jpg, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

http://support.microsoft.com/library/images/support/kbgraphics/Public/EN-US/SecurityShield.jpg If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

2.Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.

3.In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.

4.Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.

5.In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.

6.Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.

7.Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
