My pc had just finished loading up when the screen went black , the light is still on the monitor and displays video input nosignal for a few seconds when it is first switched on, the pc also displays signs of life when switched on like you can hear it running and loading up and lights flash on the dvd re writer and external hard drive but nothing comes up on the monitor screen. I have had to switch it off twice because of this by holding the on button down for a few seconds.

What is wrong ? what can i do?

Hi

Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help.

Does it work is Safe Mode?

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.

  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again. If F8 doesn't work try F5.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Log on with an account that has administrator priviledges, usually your own account (NOT the account named Administrator).

So you can't even get into the BIOS right?

Check the monitor cables. Make sure it is firmly connected.

Do you have a spare monitor to test the computer on?

We need to find out if this is the motherboard or the monitor or if it is something else.

You may have to switch the video from the laptop to the newly connected external monitor. There is usually a button on the top row of keys to do this. Usually you hold a blue 'Function' button on the keyboard bottom left while tapping the 'Toggle Monitor' button on the top row of keys. The purpose is to toggle the video output between the laptop monitor and the external monitor. Refer to your user manual.

Hi

Yes most likely. Seeing this is onboard graphics, you will need to get a seperate graphics card. Tell us if you get the monitor tested.
