Guest Yifei Li Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Our server is running Windows 2003 Server R2 Enterprise x64 Edition. Yesterday I happened to notice I can't open Windows Firewall anymore. I tried to start Windows Firewall service, but got the following error: Could not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing(ICS) service on Local Computer Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it's disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it But I checked that service startup type is automatic and it has hardware profile enabled. The server is running Mcafee Antivirus. But I don't think that's the problem because we have another server with exactly the same OS and antivirus software where the Windows Firewall/ICS service is working fine. I really really neeeeeeeeeeed help because I have to finish setting up the server before the new semester starts BTW, the server has two NICs thanks yifli
Guest Coraleigh Miller Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Re: can not start Windows Firewall Hi Yifei Li, You might want to check that your NIC (your main configured one) is bound to TCPIP & client for MS Networks and that its set to the top of the Connections list (Network Connections->Advanced->Advanced Settings). Also if you are not using the other NIC at all make sure its disabled, and to go a step further, unbind it from TCPIP etc. Also within your Services ->DHCP Client check that it is started and that under the Log On tab your hardware profile (prob Profile 1) is Enabled. Guest yifli Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Re: can not start Windows Firewall Thank you for the reply I think you meanNetwork Connections -> [My network connection] -> Properties? My connection is using Client for Microsoft Networks and Internet Protocol(TCP/IP). And I've already disabled the unused NIC. I checked that DHCP client is running and hardware profile 1 is enabled. Any ideas? Guest Coraleigh Miller Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Re: can not start Windows Firewall The location I meant was within your Network Connections window in the menu at the top (File,Edit..etc) there is an Advanced, click on that and then select Advanced Settings. Im sorry, I have to run now, I will research this abit further as soon as I can. Guest yifli Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Re: can not start Windows Firewall Hi, Unfortunately, DCOM Server Process Launcher service, Network Connections service and COM+ Event Sytstem service are started. The startup type of DCOM Server Process Launcher service and COM+ Event System service is automatic, and the startup type of Network Connections is manual. BTW, even if the Windows Firewall service is not running on the domain controller, I can still remote desktop to it. Guest Coraleigh Miller Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Re: can not start Windows Firewall Hi again :-) Another thing you can try is resetting your IP stack/Winsock LSP catalog. In a command line type: Netsh WinSock Reset This will reset your IP & Winsock back to its original state, so make sure before you reboot to re-add the ip/gateway/subnet you may need. Also it may screw up your McAfee but that can be reinstalled if necessary. If that doesnt work you could try deleting your network card through device manager and installing it fresh, possibly a new driver is available for it as well. Was there any software or drivers installed right before you noticed this issue? You could try disabling your McAfee as well as any other 3rd party apps from bootup to try and track down a possible culprit. If you noticed this issue just after installing 2003 SP2, you could try reinstalling it. You could try running a virus & spyware scan from an online source like http://housecall.trendmicro.com . ....and if none of these work..i am out of ideas :-) Wipe it clean and install new? Let me know if anything worked.
