Hi

I have an HP computer which runs on Windows Vista. Often I try to shut down my PC, at which point it starts trying to install HP updates. However, I come back to the PC several hours later to find that it is still trying to do the same installation process, and the only way to shut the PC down is to turn it off at the plug. I have also had problems when Mozilla Firefox tries to install updates.

I have run a Hijack This report, which hasn't come up with anything useful, so I am at a loss as to what to try next.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Susie

Have you looked at your available hard drive space??

I have seen problems like this and they didnt have enough space for the updates to install

Do you have an HP printer Gousbi?

Welcome to FPCH by the way.

Hello

I've checked my available hard drive space (I'm assuming that's the C drive we're talking about?) and I've got 254 of a possible 327 remaining. For the Factory Image I've only got 1.40 of 7.52...

My printer is an Epson Stylus which doesn't agree very well with windows vista.

Anything else you can think of ?!

Hi gousbi;

I don't know what's interfering with your HP and FireFox auto updates. It could well be one of your security applications. In my opinion though Auto HP Updates is buggy.

In the mean time you could disable automatic updates. Nothing on my system is set to auto including HP updates. To disable HP auto updates open HP Update from All Programs and click Settings. Here you can choose your options.

To get the updates manually go to the HP site and choose Drivers and Downloads for your model. This will give you the options to update that are not included in the Auto Updates.

Hi

Thanks for the response... I've just tried to reply but I don't think it went through, so apologies if you get this twice.

This evening everything was working ok on my pc, but I clicked 'ok' on a request for an itunes update, and since then I have been unable to open up the internet, and when I tried to click on HP updates it wouldn't work either. I have tried to reboot several times but each time I end up having to disconnect the kettle lead in order to shut down (the PC is currently frozen as I type this - I've had to hook up my old laptop).

I managed to get into safe mode and run hijack this and have attached a copy (I am a one trick pony and this is the only thing I know to do when things aren't working properly). I've run an analysis of the report but nothing interesting came up, except to say that my windows pack needs updating and that I appear not to be using any antivirus (I am running Zone Alarm, which says that the antivirus is activated).

Now I am just sitting here cursing the day I decided to welcome a new PC running Windows Vista into my life!! Any thoughts?

Disable ZoneAlarm and then see if Firefox updates.

If not, go into Safe Mode with Networking by continuously tapping F8 as soon as you turn on the computer. Can Firefox update now?

BTW- I agree with Randy in turning off auto HP updates.

Hi

All seems to be working fine now thanks - HP updates are no longer automatic and as long as I turn off my firewall I can load all updates without my computer going into meltdown.

Thanks very much for your help!
