Thanks Goku, your post looked promising and I added Microsoft to the trusted sites list just how you mentioned. Unfortunately the updates still failed upon installation. I have decided to look at one update, Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB946691) and see if could install them manually on its own. I went to the Microsoft site downloaded this update but then a dialog box appeared with the following error.

I’ve noticed that it mentions something about my Pilot wireless Mouse two paragraphs down.

Update for Office 2007 (KB946691) has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

That might be a pointer towards the cause of the problem but unfortunately, I don't understand any of the below. Perhaps someone with better knowledge of HTML might understand it.

Meanwhile, have you tried the basic troubleshooting steps Microsoft recommends? If not, then please try them and see if they help or not. :)

How to troubleshoot common Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server Update Services installation issues

Thanks Goku

I tried the link to the Microsoft Support page but that didn't really help with my Office 2007 Updates problem. It’s difficult to work out what is causing the problem. I have tried uninstalling then reinstalling but the problem still exists. There are no error numbers, so I can't even have a Google to see what a particular error code means. I have painfully tried to install an update on its own but as per the above post there seems to be a lot of HTML to decipher.

Thanks for everyone’s help so far though.

No problem Russ. We will try to help you as much as we can. Just hang in there till I search for an alternate solution.

OK, I searched your problem again and it seems that the problem is caused due to a corrupt installation of the Windows Update Agent. Please download the standalone version of the latest version of the program from the following link and reinstall the application.

Windows Update Agent 7.1.6001.65 (Direct Link)

After you have downloaded the file, install it and reboot your computer. See if you can install the updates or not. Let us know how it goes. Good Luck. :)

Hi

I have done some searching and found a few sites that said SP3 is the problem.

But before uninstalling SP3. Try this

Open notepad (NOT wordpad) and copy everything in the codebox below and paste into notepad:

regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll
regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
regsvr32 /s wups2.dll
regsvr32 /s wups.dll
regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll

In notepad, click on file then choose "save as" and type "fix.bat" (Including the quotes) and save it to your Desktop

Now dubble-click on fix.bat

When it is finished try the updates again.

Tell us if it is working or not.

Thanks guys! Everyone is being extremely patient & helpful!!

I've tried both fixes but unfortunately the updates are still failing. Does make me wonder if it is Windows Service Pack 3 screwing everything up. I'm ready to launch my laptop out the window. Anyone want to attend the launch?

try booting into safe mode (tapping f8 at startup)

then type this in the sart>rin command %systemroot% now scroll to "softwaredistibutions" rename that to softwaredistibutions.old click yes to accept IF prompted.

now reboot into normal mode and got to the windows updates site and try again.

let me know if this does.does not work and i will try a few other things

kind regards

I booted up in safe mode & renamed the soft distribution folder with .old after it. Rebooted & went back to the Windows Update site. I ran the check for updates & Windows found 9 Office 2007 updates. I downloaded the updates then it automatically began to install them. Fingers crossed i thought it was sorted but the dreaded failed... after every update appeared.

Hi Danzil

It’s definitely 100% a legitimate copy of Microsoft Office Professional 2007 with Business Contact Manager. I purchased the office software when i bought my laptop. I have tried repairing the software a few times but it doesn’t seem to do anything. The programs e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel etc all work fine without any problems. It’s just the windows updates that won’t install for some bizarre reason. I have Windows XP service pack 3 installed and 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed already too. I probably have mentioned it but it’s no harm listing it again.

Cheers mate!

I have found the Event Viewer through >My Computer >Manage and have noticed two relating to MS Office. One called MS Office Diagnostics the other MS Office Sessions. I was going to save the reports in .txt file format but this would have been an extremely long post. I was looking at the Application report under >My Computer > Manage >Event Viewer >Application and noticed the following failure.

08/2008 19:08:00 MsiInstaller Information None 11708 NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM RUSSELL Product: Microsoft Office Professional Hybrid 2007 -- Installation failed.

I have noticed this before, Microsoft Office Professional Hybrid 2007. I’ve had a Google and can’t really make sense of the Hybrid version of Office Pro 2007. I did start out at the very beginning of this post talking about how I had to remove Office Pro 2007 due to an error in PowerPoint. Since reinstalling the Office suite from the original software CD I have noticed that Office Pro Hybrid 2007 has appeared.

Thanks for your speedy responses Danzil. Have a look at this another day mate. I’ll see if I can find anything more.

I think I may have left the office updates and not un-installed them. I have noticed that you cannot un-install Windows Installer 3.0 from the Add/Remove programs. It doesn’t have the option to remove it or make any changes. I purchased my laptop brand new from Dell along the Microsoft Office Professional 2007 with Business Contact Manger software. There are two CD’s, one for Office and the other is separate for installing Business Contact Manager (which I cannot install). The MSQL service doesn’t work on my laptop. I have my own unique license key to use Microsoft Office Professional 2007 with Business Contact Manger software so it cannot be a trial version.

Thanks, Russ:p

Right try this one more time:-

Uninstall Office 2007 using add/remove.

Restart

Manually go to C:/program files/microsoft office - delete the whole file.

goto add/remove and remove any trace of office from there

Restart check its all gone and then reinstall and try and do the updates and make sure that office is set to ALLOWED in the firewall.

Will try your suggest now Dalo. Will come back asap with an update.

Cheers!
