MS Office 2007 updates failing to install on XP Pro

I downloaded the update and installed as requested. Upon installation a dialog box appeared containing the following message

Update for Office 2007 (KB934391)

----------------------------------------

The expected version of the product was not found on the system

Office 2007 is installed and functioning fine without any problems. Cannot see why this error would crop up.

Have you tired my suggestion of removing the office 2007 components individualy from start>run type in without the quotes "installer".then in my previous post i show you how to find the msi or exe to uninstall office 2007.

You are looking for anything that says office 2007.

Just double click it.....do so for all updates.

look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\OFFICE\12.0

right click that key and click on delete.

do the same for

HKEY_CURRENT USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\OFFICE\12.0

Hey thanks mate!

I will try this now. I have gone to >start >run and typed installer. a folder has appeared with lots of installer files, for example one is called 248b6b and theres a lot more. Plus several folders which begin with {numbers and letters}. Which do I delete? Do I only go to this folder after I have run Add/Remove programs and uninstalled Office 2007. Sorry if I'm losing the plot. Been a long day!

I have removed office 2007 and reinstalled it after clearing the installer folder and getting rid of the HKEY’s for Office completely. Office installed fine but updates popped back up again saying they had failed to install. I tried to install the update for office 2007 (see posts above) using a direct link to the download. This time instead of the update saying the system couldn’t find the program it just says update failed.

Tried the above in the command prompt. Copied and paste them exactly and hit enter. I was surprised that no message popped back to confirm the commands had been installed. Very strange.

Are you using any Firewall? If yes, then which one? Also, please download the Windows Update Agent from the below link.

 

Windows Update Agent 3.0

 

Visit the link and select the appropriate Operating System version. Download the installer and install the Windows Update Agent.

 

It seems that either the Windows Update Agent is corrupted or something is restricting the updates from being installed on your computer.

 

Let us know the results as soon as possible. :)

A quick update to let you all know where I am at.

ü Uninstalled Microsoft Office Professional 2007

ü I have uninstalled Windows Service Pack 3 (SP3); I’m now back with SP2.

ü Reinstalled Microsoft Office Professional 2007

ü Downloaded & installed Update for Windows XP (KB927891)

ü Installed Windows Update Agent 3.0

My firewall is controlled by McAfee Security Centre & I have made sure that Office & any MS products have inbound/outbound access.

I’m now going to look at the link now that Goku post “unable to install Windows Updates”.

I will update again if I find anything.

I have just tried to install the office updates and unfortunately the reinstalling office and applications hasn't cured the updates from failing upon installation. I agree, I think there could be a lot of mess left behind. I thought uninstalling SP3 would help but it hasn't. I'm going to stick with SP2 now until I've got everything working in a stable condition.

I don't have any other Microsoft applications running. The ones I know of are Office Pro 2007, the Microsoft SQL (which is broken) cannot install Business Contact Manager because of it. Keeps on referring to a folder located with my C:\ drive. I have no add-ons for Microsoft Office.

Okay well try removing Office 2007 completely again.

 

Then follow the "manual" portion of this KB article.

How to uninstall the 2007 Office system if you cannot uninstall it by using the "Add or Remove Programs" feature

 

Then when that is done try running the REGISTRY CLEANER of this program.

NOTE: Normally I would not advocate using a registry cleaner as they are typically useless, but in this case we're wanting to remove any potential CLASS conflicts and it impossible to find them and remove them manually.

 

Go into your CONTROL PANEL - ADD/REMOVE and look for anything to do with Microsoft Office or SQL and remove it.

 

Also have it clean up all your Temporary files. Then reboot and go to your C:\Program Files folder and look through COMMON and other folders to ensure that there are none left over from Microsoft Office.

 

DISABLE ANY ANTIVIRUS you have on your system before proceeding.

 

Then run the Microsoft Windows Update from here:

Microsoft Update

 

Then scan using CUSTOM and look for any OFFICE updates (you should not find any). DO NOT install any of the Hardware updates if found as they are often not up to date and could cause issues on your system.

 

Install any CRITICAL updates and reboot your computer. Then install Office 2007 and then download this file and run it right after the Office install. It is a 218MB file and I highly recommend using it instead of the Windows update site.

 

The 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 1 (SP1)

 

Then reboot your computer and go back to the Windows Update site and scan for updates again and see what it finds. If it finds updates, don't install them. Note their KB number and manually locate and download them.

Apologises for the delay replying to your post. Thanks for the instructions. I have CCleaner installed anyway on my laptop so I am use to the functions of this little piece of freeware. I followed the above line by line making sure I removed everything to do with MS Office 2007. Including going into the COMMON files folder. I also made sure that anything to do with SQL was deleted as well. I uninstalled Windows SP3 and started fresh with SP2. I installed office ok. No problems everything installed fine once I had entered my registration key. Then using the second CD for Business Contact Manager, this failed to install and a message popped up to say the install had failed and to check a TEMP folder. Aside from that I opened up Outlook 2007 (now installed fresh) and straight away a dialog box appeared with a message saying "Microsoft Office Hybrid Professional 2007" needed to configure itself. This ran automatically and soon disappeared. The programs work fine but again the Windows updates for Office 2007 will not install. Despite downloading each one and installing them individually each one hit back with nothing more than "UPDATE FAILED TO INSTALL". There were no reason codes or explanations to why the updates had failed. I have installed Windows Installer 3.0 numerous times, in case it had been corrupted. I have renamed the "softwaredistribution" folder under %systemroot% to "systemdistribution.old" then tried to download and install the relevant updates. Again this had no effect. Downloading is fine without any problems, come to the install part then that's when all the failure messages begin. I could carry on fine using OFFICE 2007 but it’s the updates that keep bugging me.

I have tried the above but still the problem persists. I did try manually downloading each individual update and saving them to my desktop. Once I downloaded the 5 that wouldn't install I then attempted to install them myself. Each one worked fine at the beginning but then a dialog box popped up saying the update had failed. No reason or any error codes were present so I couldn't say what the cause was. It seems like no matter how hard you completely remove Office Pro 2007 and SQL server the updates still won't install.

I'm not encountering any other problems with my system other than the office updates. I've tried installing office enterprise but it will not accept my license key (the key I have with the original office pro 2007 software i have).

 

Other security software i have installed is mcafee security centre. i dont think this has effected anything because updates can still be installed ok.

try this. I had the problem yesterday and this fixed it:

 

Re-register the Windows Update DLL with the commands below

 

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

Copy and paste each of the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.

 

regsvr32 wuapi.dll

regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll

regsvr32 wucltui.dll

regsvr32 wups.dll

regsvr32 wups2.dll

Then run the update again . .
