Hi,

I notice that Remote Desktop sessions will blacken their screens after a

period of inactivity. Why is this and how can it be controlled? I believe

my Power Schemes are set to never turn off the monitors and the screen saver

is set to none.

Also, when it does happen, how can I wake up the RDP session in a

non-destructive way? The only thing that works for me is to click the

screen. Shift-key or CTRL+ALT+END doesn't help.

Thanks!

Have you run an rsop to check what settings the users are getting?

RE: Screen goes black

Hello Bob,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

From your post, I suggest you try the following steps to troubleshoot this

issue:

On the Terminal Server side:

======================

1. Check for any spyware or malware installed on the machine

2. Disable the following policies on the Terminal server:

userconfig->administrative templates->control panel->display->password

protect screensaver

userconfig->administrative templates->control panel->display->screen saver

userconfig->administrative templates->control panel->display->Screen saver

timeout

3. Check the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\Screensaver values.

They should be set to 0

4. Set the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\ScreenSaverTimeout value

to 6000 from 600

5. This problem can occur if the "User Mode Process Dump" tool (Process

Dump applet in Control Panel) has been installed on the Terminal Server.

To resolve this issue, uninstall the "User Mode Process Dump" tool from

Add/Remove Programs. If "User Mode Process Dump" does not appear in

Add/Remove Programs but the Process Dump applet is present in Control

Panel, you may use Userdump 7 and the installation routing for Userdump7

has a "Remove" option.

On the client side:

======================

1. Apply the latest RDP 5.1 on the client

Windows XP Remote Desktop Connection software [XPSP2 5.1.2600.2180]

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=80111f21-d48d-426e-

96c2-08aa2bd23a49&displaylang=en

2. Also this issue may be due to an idle disconnect issue from the client

side. Please add the following two keys on the client:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server

--create a new REG_DWORD called: KeepAliveInterval

--set the value to 1 to activate it

--create a new REG_DWORD called: KeepAliveEnable

--set the value to 1 to activate it

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao

Re: Screen goes black

Hi Ken,

Frankly, I thought I was going to here that my complaint is normal behavior

in that it was an attempt to save bandwidth for an idle session. But I guess

not and there really is a problem here.

The mulitple remote sessions are Windows 2003 servers and I use either

iShadow Desktop or visionapp Remote Desktop to access them (but I've seen

this using a local 2K3 server with its builtin Remote Desktop too).

When you mention Terminal Server, I presume you mean all Windows 2003

servers - not ones that have Terminal Server & Terminal Server Licensing

enabled via Windows Components. Only one of the serveral servers that

present this problme has Terminal Server & Terminal Server Licensing

enabled. All the rest just have the default three session maximum Remote

Desktop enabled.

I would imagine that if I were to alter the GPO's for Administrative

Templates\Control Panel\Display\Screen Saver, this will affect all

workstations, not just those that are running a TS session on these

servers - right? That being the case, I wouldn't want to be messing with

those GPO's.

You mention that I should install RDP 5.1. I presume this is to be

installed on my Windows XP machine and not each server? Does this still

apply when I'm not using Remote Desktop Connection, but rather iShadow

Desktop or visionapp Remote Desktop?

How can I tell what version of RDP I have now?

Thanks!

Bob.

RE: Screen goes black

Ken,

I'm having the same problem, users minimize RPD session and when the try to

make it active they get a black screen for about 60 second. Users connecting

to a TS via a PTP T1. The users in the same location as the server don't

experience this problem, just the users in the remote office. I have

implement the suggested changes to the server GPO and to the users pc, and

the problem still exists.

Both locations have their own internet access so for testing I have set up a

couple users to access the TS via the public IP address of the office where

the server is located. That seems to have fixed the blackout problem but now

when those users minimize the rdp session it will automatically pop back up

on the desktop every 15-20 minutes.

Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance

Eric
