Guest Homer Jay Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 I am having a problem getting XP Pro to install............ I format the HD, the install runs through fine, and then I get a BSOD with an error telling em remove any newly installed hard drives, or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run chkdsk/f to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. The stop code is *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF8A80528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) I have tried different hard drives, different IDE cables, ran Memtest etc and still cannot get past this screen. Any ideas what is left to try? I don't have another PC with a floppy drive, so I can't get the HD manufacturers drive utility, unless I can boot it off a USB key........... at this point I am stuck, and getting fed up. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have details of the motherboard make and model and BIOS details? When was this computer new? Year? Guest John John Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Re: Unable to boot XP Pro You probably need to use the F6 method and supply SATA or controller drivers on a floppy diskette. At the beginning of the setup routine you need to press F6 when prompted and have the drivers on a diskette. If you cannot or do not want to use a floppy then you will have to incorporate (slipstream) the drivers to the installation CD or install from a network share point. Guest Homer Jay Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Re: Unable to boot XP Pro Would I still be able to run through the installation without providing these SATA or controller drivers? This is what confuses me the most, that XP installs fine, but then craps out after it reboots. In the event that I can't get the drivers on a floppy, can I provide them via USB key? Its a Compaq that is a few years old now, no more than 3 or 4 though I think. BIOS recognizes hard drive fine. Sometimes yes, it's not all that uncommon to have the text mode portion of the setup to "appear" to go well without drivers and then have it give an 0x7b error at the first reboot. > In the event that I can't get the drivers on a floppy, can I provide them > via USB key? No, the drivers *must* be supplied on a floppy diskette, the setup program *will not* accept the drivers from any other media source. You can scrounge a floppy drive from another computer an temporarily attach it to the motherboard or you might be able to use a USB floppy drive but only a handful of USB drives are compatible with the F6 driver installation method: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916196 If you cannot use a floppy disk then you will have to use another installation method. > Its a Compaq that is a few years old now, no more than 3 or 4 though I > think. BIOS recognizes hard drive fine. That doesn't mean that Windows will be able to install on it without drivers. You have tried different drives and ruled out other possible causes so that leave me to believe that this is a controller driver issue. You can go to the Compaq/HP site and check the support section for your particular Model number and see if anything is mentioned there about SATA or Mass Storage Device drivers and Windows installation issues. Or post the model number of the machine and someone here might have knowledge of the particular machine. John

BIOS recognizes hard drive fine. Homer Jay: Before you go any further with this... 1. Is the HDD in question actually a SATA HDD and not a PATA HDD? In your original query you said you've tried "different IDE cables". What *is* the make & model of your HDD? Is there another HDD connected to the system? 2. Do you know the make & model of your motherboard? 3. When you say you "format the HD" and the "install runs through fine", are you doing all this with the XP installation CD, i.e., partitioning/formatting the drive and going through the XP installation process with the CD? If not, what exactly are you doing? Since this is a Compaq machine are you using a Compaq recovery/restore CD to do all this or are you using a "full" version of the XP Professional installation CD? 4. If you *are* able to install the XP OS onto that disk by going through the setup process without incident, it certainly doesn't sound to me that the problem you relate is being caused by a SATA controller driver. If that *was* the problem you would have received an "unable to find a hard drive" type of error message before you could even undertake the XP install. 5. If you have suspicions that the problem is with a defective HDD, you can usually download the HDD diagnostic utility file from the manufacturer to create a bootable CD with the diagnostic. Is this the same HDD that was previously installed as the boot drive in that machine? If so, was it working properly or were you experiencing problems with it? Do you have any specific reason(s) to believe that you *may* be dealing with a defective disk? You really should provide a much clearer picture of your system. Since it's an older machine had it been previously functioning OK? Why the new installation of the XP OS? Is it because of a newer, larger HDD? Anna

There was another HDD connected (a Maxtor HDD) that I tried to use, but ran into the same issue with this HDD. > > 2. Do you know the make & model of your motherboard? Its an ASUS K8N8X-LA > > 3. Thats what I thought, I figured if it could not find the HDD then it would not go through install (asking me to select keyboard layout, network settings etc) so through the graphical part of installation. > > 5. I downloaded the HUTIL from Samsung and performed a low level format on the drive, reinstalled XP and still got the same error. The HUTIL finds no errors on the drive. Its the original HDD from the PC. > > You really should provide a much clearer picture of your system. Since > it's an older machine had it been previously functioning OK?
