Hello,

A friend of mine had an issue with her pc. She was in the middle of a virus

scan and the cat accidently stepped on the power switch of the surge

protector, shutting down the pc. Ever since then windows will not start. Try

to do a Norton GoBack and restore the system, but it fails. Try by-passing

goback and starting windows normally, or in safe mode and I am unsuccesful

everytime. It will start to boot but then eventually the pc will re-boot.

We purchased a new HDD, formatted it and everything is up and running now. I

re-installed the old hardrive so that i can transfer her old files onto the

new HDD. I can not access it becaus ethere is no drive letter. Goto computer

management, disk management.

The drive is there but I can not assing a drive letter because when i right

click, it is NOT highlighted. Also what is weird is, she had XP Home on

orignally so the file system should be NTFS, and she had to partitions C and

D. In Disk management the drive shows up as FAT32 and 1 partition. Says it is

Online, Healthy, and Active.

I need to get this fixed so that I can access the drive and retrieve all of

her old data. Is there away to fix this or is she SOL??? Both HDD are SATA

Drives

I appriciate any help I can get Thank you.

Try googling "data recovery utilities". You'll get a number of hits on

utilities for this situation. Most are available as demo versions; they'll

go through the motions, showing you what they can do, but not actually

recover the data. If it looks suitable, pay the money to unlock it and

hten get the data.

If nothing else, you can probably retrieve the data using recovery software

such as:

Data Recovery Wizard, $69.95. Retrieves data under just about any situation

(as long as the drive still spins).

http://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/index.htm

Restoration, Freeware, limited retrieval capabilities.
