Guest Steven Frank Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 I have a new (10 days) install of Win2k3 Standard that is giving me a blue screen at boot saying that the hive cannot be loaded. First, what options do I have for recovery (I do have a full backup on tape) and second any thoughts on the cause? Interestingly, on this particular box, which is a development server not in production, I had this happen once before. That time I just did a reinstall but at this point I'd like to get to the bottom of the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Is the boot partition's (partition with the \Windows folder) filesystem intact and without error? I'd first try runing chkdsk from the recovery console to make sure that there aren't any errors on your boot partition. There's no sense in repairing the registry if the file system is repeatedly getting corrupted.
