Help: incomplete icon!

Hi guys

 

Me again. Not my P.C this time (that's fine) but another member who i'm trying to assist.

 

The problem we have is in the control panel (Windows XP SP3)

 

The internet options icon is incomplete and won't open. The icon only has the globe and a sort of notebook with two ticks on it instead of the globe with an tft monitor and one tick on it like the normal icon.

 

It also will not give a description when you hold the mouse pointer over it as all the other icons do. There is no description under the icon either.

 

Right click it and you either get open or create shortcut but when you click open nothing happens.

 

I'm afraid i'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do about this or which way to go to solve the issue.:confused:

 

Scans have been done with ESET and Superantispyware and both are clean

 

Her system is Elonex P.C AMD 64 processor

Windows XP home edition SP3

(OEM)

512MB ram

IE7

 

Hope someone can help

P.S I have been through 2 XP books i have from the library but neither refer to this problem at all

Thanks for the prompt response. I'vfe had a look at the thread as advise but i dunno if it's my brain fried or what but i can't seem to fathom out what to do.

 

This icon is in the control panel, it is the one called internet options ,where, once inside you can set your security settings, trusted sites, restricted sites etc etc as well as clearing your temp internet files, cookies etc etc

 

I tried putting a short cut to desktop but that says in the properties box that it's a shortcut to control panel but not to internet options. It just says shortcut to and then nothing.

 

I may sound as though i haven't grasp the jist of the thread but please excuse me as i've been at this problem all day without sucess and my brain is totally fried at the moment.

Did you actually right click Internet Options and choose "Create Shortcut" or did you click Control Panel and hit "Send to Desktop"?

Ok I have just looked at mine on the control panel (and mine is the globe with the notepad and 3 ticks) I am running Vista SP1

it is for internet options ONLY - not for accessing the internet itself

to get the icon to use the internet goto "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" and then make a shortcut to the desktop

I am running windows XP. I do not want to acces the internet. I have no problems with that. What I can't access Internet options in the control panel. It will not open. I have tried putting a shortcut on the desk top but it still won't open.

I have taken over from pc plodder.

I have followed the instructions below, but the file is not there. The instructions were found on a google search.

 

1. Open My Computer, select Tools and then Folder Options, click the view tab and then select show hidden files and folders (remember to go and change it back again afterwards)

2. Search for the file : inetcpl.cpl which is located: C:\Windows\ie7

3. Right click on this file and then click on copy and then go to this location: " C:\Windows\System32 " and paste the copied file. You will be asked whether you want to replace the file. Click on yes.

Open Internet Explorer and you will be able to open Internet options.

Can you get to the internet options from within IE?

 

Open IE>Tools>Internet Options.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately not. No matter how I get to Internet options, I can't open it.

I have the icon showing without the descriptive writing underneath. As I said in my last post, I tried to find the file stated, but it just wasn't there. I'm wondering if this problem occured when I inadvertently dowloaded IE7. Have tried to unistall IE7, but was unable to get back online as it deleted all internet access. It has been said that when you uninstall IE7 the pc reverts back to IE6, but in my case this did not happen.

You might want to look at this and see if there is a policy restriction on IE.

I did what the site said, but I still have no descriptive writing under the icon and I am still unable to open it.

Since this started with IE7 after upgrading from IE6 you could try to uninstall IE7 again.

 

Then download IE7 and reinstall.

I haven't got IE7 in my add/remove progs, so I've tried the other two methods.

Method 2 started but then stopped, showing a box which said "could not find hmmapi.dll.mui" so it would not continue.

Method 3 took me to the add/remove page again. Internet 7, again was not there, but there are 4 ie7 updates. Do I remove these, bearing in mind that they are only updates.

Sounds like corruption in IE7. Try this:

 

1.Open Internet Explorer 7. 2.Click Tools, and then click Internet Options. 3.Click the Advanced tab. 4.Under Reset Internet Explorer Settings, click Reset.

Thanks for that, but I am unable to open internet options no matter which way I approach it and the way you suggested is one on them.

Doh!

 

Try seeing if you can do the reset from Safe Mode.

 

I'm thinking something like a security program is blocking the options. Is Spybot installed?

 

Also try using the repair function in SuperAntiSpyware that say's "Remove Internet Explorer Policy Restrictions". It's under Preferences>Repairs.

Just tried all that you suggested in last post. I have Superantispyware. That unfortunately did not work.

Have just tried it in safe mode and have the same result.

No need to apologize, we'll just need to throw some more things at it.

 

Click on the following link and copy and paste the contents into Notepad. Choose "Save As" and save it to the desktop with the name internet.reg

Now double click the internet.reg icon and allow it permission to run. Restart the computer when complete.

 

Another option as a test is to create a new user account in order to determine if the problem is just with one account, or global.
