Bowler Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 ok. The link didn't work. I tried opening up another account, but things are still the same. Quote
Seth Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 All right. I'm rolling my sleeves up now:D. Post a HijackThis log, as I would like to see if there is anything unusual embedded within IE. If that fails to resolve anything, then I'll give you the steps to manually remove IE7, then you can reinstall it if you want. Make sure you have another browser on board such as Firefox. Seth Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 The log shows as I suspected: Policy restrictions in IE7. Probably caused by a previous infection. What's unusual though, is SAS's repair function should have fixed that. Give me a second mate... Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Bowler Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 (edited) I've removed the items you said. Guess what? Still the Edit same!!!! Edited Edited July 31, 2008 by maynardvdm Quote
Seth Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 Well, those restrictions are the problem. Some other program might be putting them back in. Run a HT again and see if those lines are back. Seth Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 Very interesting. Run SAS again and choose the following repairs (You don't need to restart until you've done the last repair): Remove Explorer policy restrictions. Remove internet explorer policy rerstrictions. Remove WinOld App policy restrictions. User Agent Post Platform reset. User Agent Reset. That should do it. Otherwise, you're probably looking at a repair install of XP, or just using a different browser. If the above doesn't work, restart the computer and make sure those entries didn't return. Bowler Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 Seth, All this hasn't worked. If I have to do a repair, then I will want to back up every thing I have on my pc. If I do this will the original problem come back when everything is put back (I would think so). I am sure that this problem occured when I installed SP3. I have just been on the phone to a friend of mine who has come up with the suggestion (on your advice of course) that if I unistall SP3 and then try to reinstall it, would microsoft then inform me of new updates. If this is the case, could I then NOT instal IE7 from the list. Do you understand what I am trying to say to you? Do you think this would work. If you say that I can back up everything, could you tell me how to do that because I don't know. Thanks Quote
Seth Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 It's worth a try, but IE7 has to be uninstalled before you do a repair install. In addition, a repair install is quite a drastic step for the issue. Have a look in Add/Remove Programs and see if IE7 is there now, and go ahead with the SP3 idea. Also have a look here: How to perform a repair installation of Windows XP if Internet Explorer 7 is installed Back later. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Bowler Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 Hi Seth, I have uninstalled SP3. My sytem now states that I have now got SP2 yet after going into ps pitstop it seems that I still have IE7. Full Path C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe Vendor Microsoft Corporation Product Windows® Internet Explorer Version 7.00.6000.16674 (vista_gdr.080415-1732) File Size 625664 bytes I run XP and I'm a bit confused about the Vista in the above log. Is this correct, should it be there or is something wrong here. Quote
Seth Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 SP3 doesn't have IE7. The Vista name is just an identifier as IE7 was designed for Vista. It's hard to believe that PC Pitstop shows IE7 in your program files, but it's not in your Add/Remove list. Have you checked that list again? It should show up as Microsoft Internet Explorer 7. If not, download Ccleaner and see if it shows up in it's uninstaller feature. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help.
