Guest Mart Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Re: MS-DOS Prompt Error It looks as though the "MS-DOS Prompt.pif" file in your C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories folder is corrupted/damaged or faulty (obsolete?) in some way. You need to look at the file (using e.g. Notepad) and see if you can see what device is being called and then try to determine why the device is not functioning. You may even have to create a new .pif shortcut. In the meantime, should also try philo's suggestion and launch your DOS application via the Start | Run window and type "command" (no quotes) and then Enter to obtain the DOS prompt. I get the same error. So you are saying that when you type "command" and then pess enter, you see EXACTLY the same error message? Your original error screen shows the problem affecting "MS-DOS Prompt.pif" file. Don't you even see a DOS prompt? BTW - What DOS application(s) are you attempting to run and has this problem only started recently - Have you ever managed to successfully run any of your DOS application(s) thru' Windows before? Guest Mart Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 Re: MS-DOS Prompt Error > yes. Everytime i try to run anything that involves the pormpt i get the > "exact" same error. What happens if you search for "command.com" in your C:\ root folder and run it directly from there. Do you get the DOS prompt to show from there? Also try it from the C:\Windows folder too. If you receive a DOS prompt from there then you may need to delete the original "MS-DOS Prompt.pif" and start afresh with a new one. In fact, it might also be useful to delete (to the Recycle Bin) any/all MS-DOS Prompt files (you can always salvage if necessary) BTW - in hindsight, you may not be able to open the "MS-DOS Prompt.pif" file using Notepad and the .pif suffix might be suppressed anyway. Instead, look at its Properties (you should find it in the Windows\Startup\Programs\Accessories folder) and see if there are any odd-ball extra batch commands for hardware etc., being called for. It would be helpful if you were to answer my previous question about what DOS application you are attempting to run, too. In the meantime, see Tips.txt (in your Windows folder) - also at :-http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262214/en-us particularly the section "MS-DOS COMMAND PROMPT" Mart "nateoooo" <nateoooo@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:FBBDFC60-7802-49B6-B78F-C2C22E64E225@microsoft.com... > > > "Mart" wrote: > >> "nateoooo" asked:- >> >> > And how exactly would I make a new .pif file with notpad?(Please post a >> > detailed explanation.
