Restore Points

Hi. I hope someone can help me. I am at the max space allowed, 12%. If I

free up some hard drive space will I be able to use the function again? Also,

why does it not let me restore, is it due to the space being limited?

Also, I am getting an error MDATA.DAT not installed. Does anyone know what

that is?

Re: Restore Points

12% does not mean anything to us since we do not know the size of your

HD........but on most systems 5-8% is adequate.

The number of restore points saved depends upon the space available...the

newer points push out the older points...but going back to a restore point

made 2 weeks ago as an example is not a smart thing to do...god knows what

has been installed since then.

What message do you get when you try to restore??

why are you trying to restore??.............how far back are you trying to

go??

mdata.dat is related to your mouse drivers.....try going to control

panel/add&remove and remove the mouse driver.....reboot and then reinstall

the drivers.

Re: Restore Points

Hi,

Reduce the disk space used to 1GB. This will purge the oldest restore point

and leave as many existing restore points as space allows. And yes, this

function will alway be available.

What message are you receiving when a restore fails?

Here are some troubleshooting steps to take when System Restore fails to

restore:

The mdata.dat file may have been removed in the restore process. This file

may be part of mouse software. Try reloading the mouse software.

Re: Restore Points

Peter,

Thank you very much. I am trying to find out why my network adapter has

failed. I wondered if it had anything to do with the mdata.dat file, but I

guess not. I believe that I can get another adapter since mine is under

warranty. But my thinking was the filethat is missing may be related somehow

to the adapter.

Re: Restore Points

You're welcome.

Test System Restore to confirm it is functioning correctly.

How do I test System Restore:

The default (and maximum) of 12% of the drive is a very poor one. . In

practice you can seldom go back more than a week or two, because any

more than that and your registry gets out of synch with everything

else. So allocating space for more than a dozen or so restore points

is a waste. All you need for that is 1-2GB at the most.

> free up some hard drive space will I be able to use the function again?

No, the problem has nothing to with the amount of space.

> Also,

> why does it not let me restore, is it due to the space being limited?

No.
