Looks like you'll be able to get it functional in win-98 by

downloading the via drivers from here:

http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=6&CatID=1110

Specifically:

http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/VIA_HyperionPro_V512A.zip

(VIA Hyperion Pro Driver Package)

That board has PCI and PCI-e slots. You won't be able to get a pci-e

video card running on win-98, so you'll have to find a PCI video card.

If you are a die-hard AMD fan, you might want to look at this board:

http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=939Dual-VSTA&s=939

(Asrock 939Dual-VSTA)

It uses the ULi M1695 chipset, which seems to have win-98 support:

http://www.uli.com.tw/eng/support/drivers.php

(Note that ULi was purchased by NVidia in Dec. 2005)

Otherwise, you might want to look at this board:

http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=4COREDUAL-VSTA

(Asrock 4CoreDual-VSTA)

It uses the VIA PT880 Ultra Chipset (same link as above for the

drivers). It can take DDR and DDR-2 memory, and it has a PCI-e

->AND<- AGP-8x slots. The downside to this board is that you won't

get the audio working so you'll have to use a separate sound card.

Re: Time to leave WIN 98?

As 98/98SE gets older it will get harder and harder to buy new hardware that

is compatible with the operating system. The latest statistics from

http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_os.asp

show 98's market share to be down to 0.9%. I still think that about a 1%

market share is great for an operating system from 1998 -- 98 /1999 -- 98SE

One must also determine how reliable the satistics are on this page and I am

not sure if the stats. are just from the U.S.A or from all over the world.

I'm sure most would agree that the fact that there are still

motherboards made and sold today (Q-3 2007) that have win-98 support

at the chipset level has exceeded longevity and availability

expectations.

I would love to see google's numbers as to what browsers and OS's are

used to access their search page.

Another browser and OS stat page can be found here:

http://www.thecounter.com/stats/2007/June/os.php

Substitute any month or year in the above URL to get results for that

time frame.

That site is showing Win-98 currently at 2% - well above Vista (!).

If you compare the results from January and May (roughly the same

traffic counts for both) XP has declined by 1%, Win-2K and MAC have

remained the same (6% and 4%) but for some reason Win-NT has shot up

from 0% to 2%. It's almost as if a lot of win-98 systems were

replaced with NT this year. Strange.

A year ago (June 2006) Win-98 was at 5%.

There may well be more people (world-wide) running Win 3.x than Vista

right now.

Here's the stats for browser use:

Re: Time to leave WIN 98?

I wonder if Windows NT might have shot up because Microsoft recently had some

kind of announcement that it would support Windows NT if the business had a

certain license with Microsoft. I think that annocement happened maybe 8

months ago or less but I am not sure. BTW, 98 Guy are you still applying

Internet Explorer 6 patches from Windows 2000 to your 98SE computer or has

that process made IE 6 very unstable. I am not worried since I have a good

strong router and now have domain access to work computer from home computer

which tightens the security standard even more for me. I think MEB has some

good ideas but I agree with you that the number #1 line of defense needs to

be a good strong hardware firewall built into the router that blocks

everything bad. I used to mistakenly think that the software firewall was

key but it is much less useful when you have a good first line of defense

because so much malware can disable or change its settings anyway. Another

thing that really bugs me recently I noticed how Creative had links to Free

AOL which I had to manually delete and the cd put the Free AOL link into my

trusted sites which I promptly deleted. Ati is up to this game as well with

having a Wild Tangent demo on their cd that is installed unless the user does

a custom installation. It makes me all the more just rely on the basic

driver from the website of the company. If companies add crap to that too

then I will be p_ssed. Thanks for listening to my thoughts on this and have

a great day.
