Guest Gerry Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Re: svchost.exe taking 30mb memory? Matt You need to identify which application is generating excessive use of svchost.exe. Download Process Explorer. For further information about Process Explorer see here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx To ascertain which service is causing the problem select the svchost producing the high CPU usage, right click, select Properties, Services. Note there are the full names and some explanation of what each service does. You will find further information on Services here: http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12 To trace the particular Service involved you need to turn off each service in turn and then restore it noting what effect it has on CPU usage. However, you need to take care and watch what other Services are dependent on that service. When you click on the Dependencies tab allow it a little time to display the information. -- Hope this helps. Perhaps it's this, Matt: When you use Automatic Updates to scan for updates or to apply updates to applications that use Windows Installer, you experience issues that involve the Svchost.exe process http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494 MowGreen [MVP 2003-2007] =============== *-343-* FDNY Never Forgotten =============== Matt320 wrote: > hi i am looking at my task manager processes and going through them 1 by 1 to > eliminate the things i dont need. i have noticed a svchost.exe taking over > 30000 kb memory and wondered if that is normal? i tried googleing it but no > avail. i also have about 6 svchost.exe 's running. what do they exactly do > and can i stop these? thank you, matt320
