Guest Duncan Anderson Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 I know that the ScreenSaver can be previewed through the Display option within Control Panel. That isn't what I want. I want to be able to manually start the screensaver whenever I leave my desk. I have the re-start - after the screensaver has come on - password protected, so by having being able to manually start the screensaver I'm manually locking off my computer without shutting down any programs. If there isn't anyway to manually start the screensaver, does anybody know of a little bit of Freeware that will do the same or another way of locking my computer without closing down programs. TIA Duncan Anderson
Guest Arun Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 RE: Manually Start ScreenSaver Hi, Windows XP does not provide a feature for that and the name "screensaver" defines the reason. The option U can use is to lock the pc using Windows key+L. However, thirdparty tool offer the feature u are asking for. refer: http://www.softany.com/MonitorControl/ http://start-screensaver.qarchive.org/ Rgds, Arun Aluvila "Duncan Anderson" wrote: > I know that the ScreenSaver can be previewed through the Display option > within Control Panel. I may have just put up with the PITA of a manual start. Wish I could help, it's an interesting issue you have here. -- HP, aka Jerry

Although there should be tools around starting the screen saver manually *with* password protection, [WinKey]+[L] may suit your needs as well. -- d-d
Guest Homer J. Simpson Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Re: Manually Start ScreenSaver You can start a screensaver like any other EXE--make a shortcut to the .scr file, type its name in the Start|Run dialog box, etc. I'm not sure it'll automatically inherit whatever options you've set up though (like prompting for password). For that, you may have have better luck looking into calling whatever API makes the screensaver kick in instead--I'm pretty sure *that* will use the settings you've configured. I can't recall the details off the top of my head, but google for rundll32 and screensaver.

You can also put the computer into a locked mode by creating a shortcut and in the target put %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation mike
