Guest nielsdimmers@gmail.com Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Lectori Salutem, Let me explain about the troubles I have with my laptop (asus, dual boot in win XP sp 2 and kubuntu) and all the mess that goes with it. 1. The windows bluetooth software expired a few months ago. I never paid much attention to this, since I wasn't in the ability to use my bluetooth connection anyway. 2. two days ago, my father bought a bluetooth equipped telephone, in order to try to connect to his telephone using bluetooth, I found that I didn't have any windows xp software on my laptop to use with it, and I had trouble finding the standard software from windows update (see later on). In order to find out if my bluetooth connection exsisted, and worked, I rebooted in kubuntu and everything was fine. This confirms both the exsistence, as well as the operationability of the bluetooth in my laptop. 3. In order to use bluetooth in windows, I wanted to download the standard bluetooth software windows gives along every copy of XP, but is abcent in mine. According to some hints on the internet (amongst wich some of microsoft itself) I should try to connect to windows update and try to download it from there. The site told me I had to have IE 5 or higher to connect to the update service, I reloaded the page in IE (version SEVEN, dutch) and nothing happened. After some trying, I got the same message as in my standard browser (Opera): download IE 5 or newer. Not even surprised, I tried to find the dutch ms download center, wich (according to the site) couldn't be found. Finally, I managed to download and install an English version of IE7 (through http://www.download.com) and went to visit windows update again. Now I got to the website allright, and it wanted to install an ActiveX control element, I accepted, the site reloaded, and does absolutely nothing! It just keeps waiting at "Bezig met zoeken naar de nieuwste versie van de Windows Update-software..." (looking for the newest version of the Windows Update Software...). Completely frustrated and annoyed, I decided to place the whole story in a newsgroup. If anyone could answer any one of the following questions, I would be greatly helped: 1. How, using what kind of software, do I connect the bluetooth of my laptop to another bluetooth equipped machine? Where do I download such software? 2. Can you explain the mistery of the "bug" in the microsoft windows update site? What happened? 3. Is the bluetooth software really in the microsoft windows update center? Wouldn't it be more logical for it to be in the download center? Or is the microsoft help-site just pointing me in the wrong direction (either one wouldn't suprise me)? 4. How do I connect to both the dutch version of microsoft windows update, and the dutch microsoft download center? Thanks in advance, Niels.

I have yet to see any Bluetooth "driver" expire in XP. You need to have a PC with a Bluetooth adapter (on motherboard, additional add-in adapter or USB) so a driver can "stay" in Device Manager. There are two kinds of Bluetooth drivers, Microsoft ones or WidComm versions. Hardware that supports one driver version does not support the second one. Microsoft has a version of Bluetooth drivers that supports a "limited" feature set (ie: Communications, networking, Sync.) WildComm drivers provide additional features, such as file transfers, OBEX etc.)
