Hello everyone,

I'm not tooooo computer saavy so please bear with me. I just became the owner of a used Compaq Presario lappie, and when I hook it up to my linksys router, that my other pc is on, It just won't find any internet.

In device manager the NIC card appears to be working fine. I tried to "repair" the LAN that's set up, and it said it was working fine as well.

It's running WIN xp home SP1 (I'd like to update asap)

Ipconfig states: 192.168.1.105, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.1.1

Any suggestions? I looked for firewall and all that, but the "security" icon that's on my desktop is not shown on this lappie... so I have no idea where to look.

So sorry if this is jumbled, I'm a mac girl really XD

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Paper Moon

First of all can I ask why you have not updated to the latest Service Pack which is now SP3 on XP?

Hello Wolfeymole :)

Well I just got the laptop, and I thought you needed an internet connection to update? Am I wrong? When I try to do Win update, it just says "page cannot be found."

This laptop has no cds, only the Compaq restore Cd's that came with it. Sorry about the noob questions :(

Thanks for the help!

I'm assuming your using a Ethernet cable to connect as oppose to using wireless?

If you are not getting any errors messages it could be a few things.

Can you try to follow and post back the results please?

Click Start and then click Run.

In the box type cmd and hit the return key

You should see a black screen with some white writing...

If you can type the following and hit the return key:

ping www.google.com

Secondly try the following command:

ping 66.249.91.147

The results of this will help us locate your problem easier.

Thanks

Hello :)

Yes I am connecting via ethernet from my router to the laptop. Here are the results from your instructions.

ping Google - Ping request could not find host Google. Please check the name and try again.

Ping 66.249.91.147 - Reply from 192.168.1.1 Destination net unreachable

Ping statistics for 66.249.91.147:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% Lost)

Approximate round trip times in Milli-seconds;

Right ok,

A couple more suggestions;

Firstly, its a long shot but just to be 100% sure, since there was a previous owner of the laptop it could have been set up to use a proxy server for a business or home network. If so, this may cause some problems you are experiencing..

To check this out, if you could open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, click Internet Options and then the Connections tab and finally click the LAN Settings button.

Under Proxy Server there should not be any information in the boxes and then ensure that the box is Unchecked.

Click OK to close the LAN Settings box, and then click OK to close the Internet Settings box and restart Internet Explorer.

Secondly, it might be something to do with your Router.. Could you tell us what Make and Model it is?

Thanks

Thanks Mike!

Under LAN setting in IE, the only thing checked off is "automatically detect settings"

The router I'm on is an older Linksys, model: BEFSR41

However my desktop pc (which I'm on right now... seems to be working fine, and is on the same thing.) I await your reply :)

Try restarting your computer in Safe Mode with Networking and see what happens.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode with Networking.

* If the computer is running, restart it.

* Start tapping the F8 key when the computer restarts. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again. If F8 doesn't work try F5.

* Use the arrow keys to ensure that the Safe Mode with Networking option is selected.

* Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode with Networking.

Hello Kelly,

I rebooted in Safe mode with networking, and it still will not bring up internet. It loads forever and shows a loooong url at the bottom that ends in dnserror.htm. It doesnt give me a page even, just a popup error that says IE could not open the search page.

I tried a different cord and a different port in my router, and it acts like there might be internet, ie: Norton comes up and asks me to update, and the .net passport wizard asks to be set up - but it still will not connect to windows update or any of these things, and still no internet. Thanks for all the help.. I'm totally stumped.

oh also: it will ping my router just fine.

Looking back at Post #5 - for the 66.249.91.147 PING, it shows host unreachable, but then it says that there were 4 packets sent and 4 received with none lost. If the host was unreachable, there would be no received packets and all would have been lost. So take another look at that.

Also, let's check the DNS setting: Go to Control Panel and open Network Connections. Open the Local Area Connection. Scroll down to the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and click on Properties. You should have Obtain an IP address automatically enabled.

Just for completeness, do the same on the machine that does connect. If that machine is not set to Obtain an IP address automatically, check to see what the setting are and then duplicate them in your newly obtained laptop.

Thanks for helping Kelly,

Yes I retried the ping on 66.249.91.147, and it still says Destination net unreachable.. but there were 4 packets sent and 4 received... how strange!

In TCP/IP settings, the laptop has the same as my desktop. Obtain both IP and DNS automatically.

Still the only "webpage" I can bring up is the 192.168.1.1 for the router.

Get back to CMD window and do ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew. Also post a screen shot of the ipconfig /all window. Thanks

Hi;

Just a thought here everyone. In post 10 you said you had Norton on this computer. Is it possible that a Norton firewall might be an issue?

I might also add that when I had a free trial version of Norton it blocked me twice from getting on the net. Once I had to restore to before an update and the other time I had to uninstall Norton.

Hi Randy,

I uninstalled all of the norton products including the symantec live update program, restarted, and still nothing. Thanks for the help! Gosh I wish I could figure out what was wrong.

Everything looks good except for maybe the IP address. I will assume that your DHCP pools starts at 100 which is normal for a Linksys router. I wonder why the router is giving you 105? If your desktop is the only other device, it should have 192.168.1.101 and then the next free address would be 192.168.1.102. So we have to ask why are you getting 192.168.1.105?

I assume you did the ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew. Please reset the router by monentarily pressing the reset button on the back and see what happens.

Thanks Kelly, Yes I did the ipconfig/release, renew, before I posted the stats. I was wondering about the 105 myself... when I had a mac in the place of this laptop, it didn't have the address ending in 105.

My router actually doesn't have a reset button anywhere on it.. I've always been told to just unplug it for 30 seconds then plug it back in. I just did that, but it didn't work. Should I restore to defaults in the admin panel for the router?

Have you checked that Network Discovery is on, on your settings:-

Network discovery is a network setting that affects whether your computer can see (find) other computers and devices on the network and whether other computers on the network can see your computer.

There are three network discovery states:

On

This state allows your computer to see other network computers and devices and allows people on other network computers to see your computer. This makes it easier to share files and printers.

Off

This state prevents your computer from seeing other network computers and devices and prevents people on other network computers from seeing your computer.

Custom

This is a mixed state in which some settings related to network discovery are enabled, but not all of them. For example, network discovery could be turned on, but you or your system administrator might have disabled a firewall exception that affects network discovery.

Network discovery requires that the dnscache, fdrespub, ssdpsrv, and upnphost services are started, that the Windows Firewall exception for network discovery is enabled, and that other firewalls are not interfering with network discovery. If some but not all of these are true, the network discovery state will be shown as Custom.

Dalo, thanks for replying... Um, I'm trying to find that window and don't see anything like it in control panel or network. I'm running XP home SP1. Can you advise please?

That particular window was off a Vista machine - should be in the network settings somewhere - not used XP for a very long time - so bear with me and I will find the place in XP

Try an ipconfig /flushdns.

If that doesn't work you might want to look at doing a winsock fix. I'm leaving for the day and can't help for another 8 hours or so. Hopefully someone else here will step in with the winsock fix.

Thanks guys,

Dalo - I looked all over my network settings and didn't see anything remotely like that.. this SP1 has even less options than my regular SP3 desktop. I can't even find any firewall options or settings.

Kelly- I did the dnsflush but still no luck. I hope I'm not overlooking something simple.. The card appears to be working.. there's a light when you plug it in, and in the device manager it says it's working proper. Other than that I'm not sure what to look for as far as hardware malfunction.

I'm open to any and all ideas!

You may have to go to the routers home page - some routers (Netgear I know use it) you have to enter the PC's MAC address in order to connect to the router.

It is a security feature.

Hi.

Go to Control Panel and dubble-click Network Connections

Right-click on Local Area Connection and select Properties

You should see this (or similar):
