maynardvdm - Thank you! Yes it's already set like that.

Dalo - I have a linksys router and there is a spot for a mac address (it's actually called Mac Adr. Clone) and gives me a few spaces to add a user defined WAN MAC address... but what should I put in that spot.. any linksys people out there know?

Right is it to add a MAC address for another computer or is it for the Router itself. (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT)

For the MAC address for a PC/Laptop open a command window (cmd.exe)

then type ipconfig/all and if you scroll to the very top it will say MAC address and will list it next to it.

Thanks Dalo,

I'm not sure WHAT that space for the address is for, it just says Mac address clone. I know that when I had other computers hooked up to this router, I never had to use it. I have my mac address from ipconfig /all... should I try this?

Mac Address clone is not what you need. I know what Dave is on about though about the Mac Address Control.

On some ISP's they use the Mac Address of the router to authenticate your service. When you change your router or PC you usually have to ring up your ISP and change inform them of your new address, thus this feature allows you to work around this and fool your ISP to think you actually havn't change hardware.

Anyway to summarize you shouldn't use this. See if there is a section called "Mac Address Access Control" or something similar...

Thanks Mike,

I couldn't find anything else in the router that looks like what I need.. Gosh I'm so stumped... even plugging it directly into the modem didn't help... it's got to be something with this laptop... I wish I could talk to the people that owned it last!

Hmm, other thought off the top of my head..

Have you checked if Windows Firewall enabled? If it is, try disabling it as that *might* cause the problem. For that fact, disable any firewall you have. I know you have uninstalled Norton but just check for anything else like Zone alarm etc.

How comfortable are you at reinstalling windows? Lol, joking..

Keep that as the last resort though :P

Hi Mike -

The funny thing is, this is xp home running SP1 - I can't find windows firewall ANYWHERE.. it's not in the control panel, there is NO security icon, and I couldn't find it on search. This compaq has a fresh install of windows - (via the compaq restore disks.. not sure how good that is..) So I'm not sure what to do! I do have a Win home cd for my other desktop, but is it ok to load the same cd onto a different comp? Any advice would be great!

(Oh and sorry for the totally noob question but.. is remote assistance totally out because there's no internet?)

Hi

When you right-click on the two computers icon in the bottom right hand corner (http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn297/Mjfreepchelp/networkicon.png),

Is there a option that says: Change Windows Firewall settings?

Or

Go to Control Panel again, dubble-click Network Connections

Right-click Local Area Connection and select Properties

then click on the Advanced tab and click on Settings in the Windows Firewall box

See here:

does your PC have a cd burner..

try downloading service pack 2 (dont believe sp3 will install if sp2 isnt already installed)and burning that to cd, install that on your laptop.

that will replace any corrupt files etc. and may fix any host issues, and config issues.

that may just help....service packs have cured numerous issue i have seen.

bt may not in your case but its worth a try,,, and if something should go wrong it can be uninstalled

Thanks Maynardvdm - I found something like that in network, there isn't a settings button where your's shows.. its actually on the bottom and all greyed out. However there is a check box for Internet Connection Firewall, and I have unchecked that... It gave me the typical warning about being protected, but still it hasn't loaded any websites....

Danzil that is a good idea..I will try that right now...

While this is copying over to my laptop, I noticed something else interesting. On the front of my linksys router are the green and orange lights. My desktop pic has a top flashing green, for link, a middle stagnant green for act, and a bottom orange for Diag? (whatever those mean!) The lights for the laptop only show the two green, for link and act.. the orange diag light is not showing... advice?

Edit: Both SP2 and SP3 that I wrote to a cd won't run or copy to the new laptop.. either copying it to desktop or running from the cd gives me an Invalid MS-DOS function... at this point I'm ready to just file a paypal claim for this thing.. they said everything was in working order. Any help?

It says it ends in exe on the download, but the name is so long, when it got to the disk, it got cut off. I used that link you gave me, but it won't copy over as is. Should i just manually add .exe on the file on the cd?

Edit: Tried this and it didn't work.... man this is getting to me..

1) Try another browser such as firefox.

2) Reset IE7. If you have IE6, then install IE7 on the system and run the reset:

1.Open Internet Explorer 7. 2.Click Tools, and then click Internet Options. 3.Click the Advanced tab. 4.Under Reset Internet Explorer Settings, click Reset.

3) Run a winsock fix WinSock XP Fix download and review - fix XP internet connectivity from SnapFiles

Thank you Seth, I did try the winsock fix, but it didn't work....I installed Firefox from a burned cd but that also will not connect. I can't install IE 7 on the laptop without SP2 or 3, and it refuses to run the updates, even from the cd I burned.

The router lights are confusing me... The laptop's port does not have all it's lights showing. On my router there are 3 lights for each computer, and the bottom orange one (marked 100) is not on for the laptop.

I have two greens and an orange for my desktop pc.. what does this mean? when the 100 light is not on?

Thanks for all the help

Are you 100% sure that you are an administrator on this laptop - not being able to install updates and service packs is a dead giveaway for you not being an administrator.

Dalo - I'm pretty sure, I'm logging into the only name available. I was getting MS-DOS errors when trying to install the updates from the cd I burned.

I'm still wondering about my router lights.. The laptop is missing the bottom light. and now I've noticed only the laptop can access the router, my desktop pc will not.. it just keeps saying connection reset.. have I messed something up?

MS DOS ?????

No Microsoft Operating System ran on dos after ME Moony.

(NT4 not included because of it's age not because it ran on dos)

Right - the problem with a router when not setup is:-

there is one ip address - and whichever pc/laptop is turned on first will occupy the ip address and the other will not be able to access the internet.

you need to go into the routers home page and there will be some settings for adding other pc/laptops to access the router and this is normally done by adding MAC addresses of the pc/laptops that will be using it.

I used to have a linksys router - for 1 day and I took it back and got a Netgear one, there are lots and lots of problems posted all over the net with Linksys routers, but some people cannot praise them enough.

I will have a look at the Linksys if you post the model number and tell you where if there are any places to add a pc/laptop.

If you plug both into seperate ethernet cables and connect to the router that way they should work. (seperate ethernet on the laptop and seperate on the pc and then plug one into port one and one into port 2 for eg)

hi again Wolfey :)

I know! But I swear that's what it said. I downloaded SP2 and 3 to a cd, tried to copy them from the cd to the lappie desktop and about 99 percent through they both said "Invalid MS-DOS function" in a pop up error. The same thing running it from the cd.

Now I copied over that winsock fix and Firefox just fine from a cd, so I don't know what went wrong. At this point I'm just ready to try to reformat the entire thing with a REAL windows disk, not that compaq restore stuff I have.

Edited because I didn't see Dalo's latest post!: I've been looking in there too Dalo, I just don't know enough about this router to know what I'm looking for. It is a linksys model BEFSR41. And I do believe I have them set up the way you specified. the cable modem is hooked into the "uplink" port - then I have my desktop pc ethernet cable to port 4 - and my lappie ethernet cable to port 3. They are separate cables. I hope that's what you mean.

sounds like whatever program you used to burn the CD's has done them as BOOT CD's and not DATA disks

Dalo- THANK YOU! It took me some time to understand it all but that really broke it down for me and was helpful. I followed the instructions to reset, and I reset the router and the cable modem to factory settings, once I did that, I rebooted my laptop and desktop and now they both work!!!! I feel bad that it seems like such a simple fix, but thank you ever so much!!! Thank you everyone that helped, this place is truly fantastic!
