Guest Heath Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 I was shutting down and powering off a few servers today and two of them would not shut down. I tried multiple times but each time they restarted instead. What could cause this?
Guest Mathieu CHATEAU Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Re: Server restarts after you choose Shutdown Hello, any weird enventlog entry ? no memory dump ? Does the eventlog clearly indicate a shutdown or a reboot (if Windows 2003 ) search in the system event log for source USER32, event 1074, information level -- Cordialement, Mathieu CHATEAU http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com "Heath" <Heath@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:52E99BAF-A24D-4117-8D63-E8775E67D973@microsoft.com... >I was shutting down and powering off a few servers today and two of them > would not shut down. Guest shimoni Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 RE: Server restarts after you choose Shutdown Try to do hard shut down from the power button on the server, if it works it's a firmware problem related to the m/b. -- MCSE 2003 "Heath" wrote: > I was shutting down and powering off a few servers today and two of them > would not shut down. Guest Heath Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Re: Server restarts after you choose Shutdown not at work right now and the server is off but... I am pretty sure if it crashed, when it came back up and you logged on, it would have given you an abnormal shutdown occurred error message. Also, when I did the shutdown, I put the reason as other and gave it a reason and that showed up in the event viewer. Guest Heath Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 RE: Server restarts after you choose Shutdown the way I ended up turning if off was from the power button while in the Bios screen, if that helps. Guest Mathieu CHATEAU Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Re: Server restarts after you choose Shutdown what is the server's hardware (model...) ? Guest Mathieu CHATEAU Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Re: Server restarts after you choose Shutdown You may use SUU from dell to ensure your firmware/bios is up-to-date. The iso can be download from : http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?c=fr&l=fr&s=gen&deviceid=9796&libid=36&releaseid=R156221&vercnt=4&formatcnt=0&SystemID=PWE_2950&servicetag=&os=WNET&osl=EN&catid=-1&impid=-1 You may use it from cd or network share, launching from windows. It will allow you to update all bios/firmware/driver based on a reference of known good version from dell. If it doesn't solve your problem and you have double check it's a shutdown that was done, then you may open a call to dell. -- Cordialement, Mathieu CHATEAU http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com "Heath" <Heath@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:2060EE3A-FAFB-4545-B8E5-959516194E8D@microsoft.com... > both servers are Dell Poweredge 2950's > > bios revision 1.3.7 > > "Mathieu CHATEAU" wrote: > >> what is the server's hardware (model...) ? >> >> Are they all at the same level of firmware/driver/bios ? same model ? >> >> -- >> Cordialement, >> Mathieu CHATEAU >> http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com >> >> >> "Heath" <Heath@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message >> news:660BC7DB-494C-46B8-8E2D-F84B195A32D6@microsoft.com... >> > the way I ended up turning if off was from the power button while in >> > the >> > Bios >> > screen, if that helps. >> > >> > "shimoni" wrote: >> > >> >> Try to do hard shut down from the power button on the server, if it >> >> works >> >> it's a firmware problem related to the m/b. >> >> >> >> >> >> -- >> >> MCSE 2003 >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> "Heath" wrote: >> >> >> >> > I was shutting down and powering off a few servers today and two of >> >> > them >> >> > would not shut down.
