98SE and XP Professional Stability

It is an original old school Sound Blaster 1 that was the last Creative sound

card to have full compatibility with Windows 98. The sound works great now

in 98 and XP Pro. I am trying to have the emulation work correctly for DOS

games in 98.

Thanks! Does Gary S. Terhune, Glen, Chris Quirke, Alan Edwards, or any other

MVP's know how to accomplish this task with the IRQ switching or can I

research it myself on a web site. I give the most credit to my friend Jeff

for reminding me to install the latest driver only for the hardware that is

linked to the appropriate operating system.

Re: 98SE and XP Professional Stability

You should be able to remove DOS emulation if you don't need it. If you do

need it, then I think it will have to use IRQ5, and it's unlikely that it

can be changed. Some very old cards needed the DOS installation utility to

set the IRQ used - if you installed it any other way you wouldn't get DOS

emulation. Later the installation became a bit more intelligent, but

probably locked you into IRQ5. Why is the use of IRQ5 causing a problem?

Well, it gave me an error message on boot at first but since then I have

tinkered with the settings in the device manager by unchecking the automatic

setting and configuring the device manually and now it appears to be loading

the DOS emulation properly. I will have to install a DOS game and see if it

works properly with the sound. Thanks for your feedback Jeff and you also

Gary for replying. I will keep you informed of my progress.

I see you have successfully solved the IRQ problem on your own. Very

good! That is tough to do going by what I've read, as it could involve

BIOS, Device Manager settings, a physical switch on the device, the

physical location of the device, & even proprietary software to run says

Camelot by Sierra and see if the sound, mouse and everything actually works.
