Problems With XP and IE since Rebuild & Reinstall

Okay, so a while ago I got myself a new motherboard, CPU, an extra hard drive, a new graphics card which works with the new board, got myself a decent upgrade in the bargain and most of my PC was now brand new.

 

I had some issues with installing windows XP back on it but eventualy (with a bit of help from people here:)) got it pretty much all up together and working.

 

However I first noticed issues when I tried putting a .jpg as my backdrop, it would act like it was doing it, but the back drop just stayed the same unless I used one of the standard windows pictures/textures. Then I noticed problems with IE as well, some links would only work if I right clicked them and selected open in new tab/window, a lot of automatic downloads would just never start, no matter how many times I navigated to the page or how long I left it on the page.

 

This isn't that much of an issue with my everday use of the PC, but can stop me from doing certain things on it, i.e. adding pictures on Ebay, DLing from some sites, etc. and would really like to get this solved.

 

I'm currently using IE7 but was having the same issues with IE6, I've tried playing around with settings in both IE and control panel to see if anything was restricting my acsess, but everything I've found and changed which seems promising has not made any difference

Just DLd and istalled firefox 3 and the links seem to be working fine, will have to run some experiments to find out if automatic DLs are working on it though.

You can also try to Restore Advanced Settings in IE or as a last resort Reset.

 

 

 

Reset or Restore Advanced Settings in Internet Explorer 7:

1. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
   
2. Click on the Advanced tab.
   
3. In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Restore Advanced Settings or click Reset
   
4. When Internet Explorer 7 finishes restoring the default settings, click Close, and then click OK two times.
   
5. Close Internet Explorer 7. The changes take effect the next time that you open Internet Explorer 7.

Thanks, that seems to have cured IEs problems, any ideas about the backdrop problem on XP? should have mentioned this at the start really but it also won't accept any sound schemes, after install even the basic sounds don't work. This is only a problem with the basic windows sounds, all other programs send out sound through the onboard sound on the MB, just don't get any basic start up, shut down, warning tones, etc. sounds. Got a feeling this ois probably connected to the back drop problem too.

go into control panel>sound and audio devices>sounds

on the drop down list at the top make sure it is set to "windows defaut".

I don't know what you mean by wallpaper doesn't apply so can you please check the following link and see if this is what you mean.

 

Wallpaper setting does not apply correctly when you create a custom default user profile ?

 

If it is, then follow the instructions provided and see if they help or not. Also, have you tried the basic troubleshooting measure recommended by Microsoft?

 

How to troubleshoot sound problems in Windows XP

 

If the sounds still don't work, then perhaps the system sound files might have become corrupted. Please report back the results and we will give you further instructions accordingly. Good Luck. :)

Well this wasn't exactly the problem I was having, but opening the .jpg I wanted with paint and saving it as a .bmp then setting it as a backdrop worked, a little annoying now but at least it's off the standard windows backdrops and I can use that workaround to get whatever I want on there now, thanks:)

Tried this and it was set as a blank scheme, however changing it to the windows default has done nothing, still no basic windows sounds, tried playing them in the sound scheme and they play fine there, but still no noise from windows default noises (critical stops, start up, shot down, etc.) other programs including IE and other basic windows applications are working fine with sound, and as I mentioned before all other programs are outputting sound fine...

Yes, all the sounds appear to be there and when I use the play icon on that screen they play fine, but even after applying they are still not playing through windows when they normaly should... The sound file they link to play fine through other programs as well (media player, AVS DVD player, sound recorder)

Here is a simple trick to fix Windows system no sound problem. The trick works by using a tool built into K-Lite Codec Pack.

 

1. Download and install K-Lite Codec Pack version 3.3.0 Full from here or here. You can deselect most components that you don’t need, except Codec Tweak Tool under the Tools section.

 

2. After installed, click on Start button, then go to All Programs -> K-Lite Codec Pack -> Configuration -> Codec Tweak Tool.

 

3. In the Codec Tweak Tool window, tick the check box next to [Registry] Fix non-working system sound.

4. Click on Next button, and your Windows no sound problem should be fixed, and working as usual.

Hmm, still no luck with the sound, tried altering things in the sound scheme as well just in case but even with a different sound scheme set up it's still not working properly, nothing I can't live without though :)

Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP

 

Double-click on the file and you will get a prompt verifying if you want to import the information into the registry. Answer Yes to the prompt and you will get a confirmation box some time later. Click OK and restart your computer. See if the problem persists.
