Guest gerard Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 I have had screen freeze up problems for a few weeks. I tried to use some of the solutions in earlier exchanges I saw on this site (e.g., delete damaged programs and cached files) but the problem persists. I now can log on using "last best known configuration" but, even then, only after a couple of freeze up instances. I can only stop these by turning off the power at the power strip switch and turn on the system in "last best known configuration" mode. The problem now seems to be confined to trying to open windows while, earlier, it could happen anytime. Any help would be appreciated. Gerard
Guest Gerry Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 Re: Screen freeze at start up Gerard Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak? How large is your hard disk and how much free space. Right click on your C drive in Windows and select Properties to get this information. Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in a previous boot. You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important. HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further information. http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp (Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only) A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. -- Hope this helps. Guest gerard Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 Re: Screen freeze at start up Gerry Thanks It took me some time to follow your instructions as I have never visited the places where you sent me, and many others. In the performance tab, the numbers are as follows: total 361052; limit 1277556; peak 384960. On the C drive: capacity 74.5 GB; free space 67.2 GB. In the event viewer, there were no warnings or errors for today's login in the Applications log but two error messages in the System log Event Type: Error Event Source: ParVdm Event ID: 2 Description: Unable to get device object pointer for port object. Event Type: Error Event Source: NetBT Event ID: 4307 Description: Initialization failed because the transport refused to open initial Addresses Both errors appear repeatedly on previous days. Guest Gerry Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 Re: Screen freeze at start up Gerard I have not encountered these Error Reports before but this link from Google looks promising: http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.configuration_manage/browse_thread/thread/e58ea3a490d06379/125591aaac19cb6a?lnk=st&q=&rnum=1&hl=en#125591aaac19cb6a It would appear an updated driver is needed. Can you please confirm the amount of RAM memory installed. -- Hope this helps. Guest gerard Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 Re: Screen freeze at start up Gerry, I have looked at that site, but I sure don't know what to do with it. How would a new port appear a few weeks ago. I confirm the unused space at 67.2 GB.
