Dalo Harkin Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 It appears that Intel has set the brand-name under which it will market its processors based on the upcoming Nehalem micro-architecture. The new desktop parts will be known as Core i7 and should be introduced by Intel on Monday – although they won’t be available until the official launch in the last quarter of this year. Core i7 processors will be made using 45nm process technology and will have from 2 to 8 cores, triple-channel DDR3 memory controller with up to 1333MHz clock-speeds, and support for multi-threading technology. Three models will supposedly be available en-masse starting at the end of this year, including a 3.2GHz Extreme processor for high-end gaming desktops. The significance of the i7 moniker remains unknown at this time but hopefully we’ll find out early next week. Dalo Harkin Posted August 11, 2008 Author Posted August 11, 2008 UPDATED Intel confirms Core i7 branding for Nehalem Late last week we heard some rumours that Intel’s upcoming processors based on the Nehalem platform would be dubbed Core i7. The chip maker has now confirmed such claims saying its next-generation processors will indeed bear the established “Core” brand, though not all of its variations will carry the i7 identifier. Apparently the i7 identifier will be applied to the first set of high-end desktop processors, including a black label “Extreme Edition” version targeted at enthusiasts that will probably boast extra features such as an unlocked multiplier for improved overclocking headroom. Intel’s choice of the i7 moniker may seem arbitrary (Nehalem is not Intel’s seventh-generation architecture as some speculated) but will reportedly fit into the naming scheme for the full line of chips when additional products along with new identifiers are introduced. The company is expected to reveal more information about Core i7 at the Intel Developer Forum on August 19, where it also plans to discuss a new energy saving technique used in the new chips. AdvancedSetup Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Probably the biggest (in my opinion) change is that all processor cores are on a single die and the front side bus is no longer used.
