Slow Boot Up

I have just returned from holiday so my PC has been switched off and unused for 2 weeks,during which time I had switched off my router but when I switched it back on and booted up my PC it has been incredibly slow in starting up, it has done this before when I had a power cut but did correct itself, yet this time, after a few days its still the same. Any solutions anyone?:cool:

Hi xanthus;

Since you have run scans in the past I'll assume your system is not infected.

 

I would venture that your computer is not up to running too many startup programs.

 

Your processor is weak for Vista and you have too little memory. Combine that with the fact you use AOL. AOL and it's add-ons and all the other garbage it loads at startup is likely part of the problem.

 

You need to disable as many programs from running at startup as you safely can. Do not disable your AV of course.

If you have not changed the PC in anyway then I doubt that any programs would be causing the problem in msconfig.

 

jusr try some basics like clearing internet cookies and temp files - and then CHECK to see the defragmentation of the HDD (do not run one unless the pc is over 40% fragged)

Am I correct that you have,

 

Windows Vista Home Premium.

A 1.6 ghz processor.

1 gb ram.

AOL.

CaTrust that comes with AOL.

 

Are you running any of the other AOL specific programs?

Are you running any default OEM programs at startup?

Have you disabled any of Vistas startups?

Have you added any programs since you first got it?

Sorry, I've not been on here for a while. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I looked on the Disk defragmenter although it is ticked to run on a schedule, it says 'Next scheduled run Never'. I did modify this, closed it and then re-opened it and it said the same again.

Yes, I did defragment, but at present I can only do this manually as it will not run on a schedule for some reason, any ideas?

What I find interesting is that xanthus didn't do anything different other than take a holiday for a couple of weeks. What could have happened in that period?

As far as i am aware, nothing, as my router was switched off, there was not internet acces to my PC.
