Guest Vic Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Is MS ever going to make a rollup package to bring our systems up to date with all patches, fixes etc? I don't care for the web update business and really prefer a rollup.

But you'll *still* need to use Windows Updates for those that come out after SP3 goes to press. IOW, you are never going to be able to get by without Windows Update. -- Gary S. And I have seldom had any problems with Windows Updates, maybe none on my own machines, and I don't "prepare" for it. What do you mean "properly prepare"? -- Gary S. Then I disable Spybot, Spywareguard and Spywareblaster's real time protection. Then I disable Avast's real time protection. Then I go to Windows Updates with IE6, choose Custom, choose the Updates (to make sure that IE7, WMP11 and WGA/N are not listed as "critical") and let it do its thing. -- Alias To email me, remove shoes
Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Re: XP rollup? Ummm... A System Restore point is automatically created before Update installs. The rest of your steps are, IMO, overkill. (On XP, anyway. I do recommend a limited Clean Boot for Win9X users.) Plus, while I'm not really conversant with CCleaner, it's my understanding that it can cause it's own problems. The one thing I try to remember to do first is to empty TEMP and delete TIFs. Don't need CCleaner for that. As for defrag... I do that AFTER updating, installing other things, etc. Makes more sense to me than doing it beforehand. In any case, I've never personally seen Windows Updates have any problems that were due to any of the things your procedures would prevent. But different strokes... -- Gary S. After the updates, I do a clean up and defrag as well. I've never had a problem with Crap Cleaner and I, and others that I know, have used it extensively on many computers with no problems. -- Alias To email me, remove shoes
