Guest Angel Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 Re: Installing Windows 98 Hi MEB and Logs, Today I checked on the University Computer Room for public use. The computers run XP Professional and they have both the CD drive and the Floppy drive. I do not know if they have burn capabilities for the CD drive. I called the Public library and they do not have the floppy drive, they have CD drives but the girl said that she does not think that they have CD burn capabilities. She was surprised to know that the University had computers with Floppy disk drive. Both the University and the public library have the ear phones. The girl at the Library suggested the flash drive. I do not think that you could use the flash drive download to gain access the disabled computer. I think that a boot floppy may the only way to go. Am I right or wrong MEB? Logs, you may have to find a friend with floppy drive capabilities to download the boot disk. If you do not know any friends with a floppy drive look for a University, College or company such as Kinko's with a floppy drive to download the boot disk. Unless you can use MEB's suggestion below. BTW, the girl at the library suggested upgrading to XP. What a terrible suggestion! I do not think she knows too much about the specs of the computer itself that you need to do it. She was not from the computer room at the Library, just a receptionist. Guest MEB Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 Re: Installing Windows 98 Angel check the libraries locally and at the University and suggests using them or a friend's computer to create a boot floppy. Good ideas. If either can be done, then sure the boot floppy idea would work. I'm not sure if Logs is able to navigate the BIOS to locate the *Boot from CDROM* after looking again through this discussion. Nor am I sure if either the boot floppy or the boot CD will take care of the issues apparently occurring. This was an installation which apparently failed at final write / pre OS boot. The last query from Logs was for links to free boot CDs: Bart's PE; any of the LIVE Linux CD virtual disks; http://www.bootdisk.com/ has boot CDs http://www.bootdisks.us/ms-dos/5/ms-dos-bootable-cd-images.html http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd http://www.google.com/search?q=DOS+boot+CD&hl=en -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com ________ "Angel" <angel@noway.com> wrote in message news:uUiI8em9HHA.5456@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... | Hi MEB and Logs, | Today I checked on the University Computer Room for public use. Guest Angel Posted September 15, 2007 Posted September 15, 2007 Re: Installing Windows 98 Hi, I was not satisfied with the receptionists answer at the library. Today I went to the public library to check on it myself. She was almost completely wrong. They have all 3 ways to download your information, floppy, CD and flash drive. The only things that the receptionist had right is that they had headsets and a flash drive. It looks like the way to find out for sure is to check it out yourself or talk to the reference dept. or the computer room people at your own public library if you call the them. When I get a computer, I make up a start up disk that has all the information you need for that particular computer. I also re-do it periodically, just in case something goes wrong with a floppy. It really saves a real hassle when you need to use one. Today | I went to the public library to check on it myself. She was almost | completely wrong. They have all 3 ways to download your information, floppy, | CD and flash drive. The only things that the receptionist had right is that | they had headsets and a flash drive. That's really not unusual, most people are unaware of their surroundings, and make assumtions based upon pure speculation. After all, she would have had to actually LOOK at the computers and understand what she saw.... | It looks like the way to find out for sure is to check it out yourself | or talk to the reference dept. or the computer room people at your own | public library if you call the them. | When I get a computer, I make up a start up disk that has all the | information you need for that particular computer. I also re-do it | periodically, just in case something goes wrong with a floppy. It really | saves a real hassle when you need to use one. | Angel Well, that is good advise, but not everyone does that, or can do that. And there's always that time when the backup may fail for some reason. Then there's my case, where I have nothing but test installations,, each one different, so the best I can do is a CD burnt with the base installation and programs, because the tests MAY be related to unofficial updates and the like... though that may finally end at the end of this year [yeah, whooohoo] .... -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com ________
