I'm experiencing the symptoms as described in this article

(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239887); my pc stop responding after

shutdown. I want to download the Shutdown Supplement, but the Download button

is only a picture. (So near, yet so far...)

Where can I find the Shutdown Supplement?

Re: Shutdown Supplement

You PC isn't supposed to respond after you shut down. If you mean you have a

hard time starting it again, that's a hardware problem. Otherwise, please

rephrase.

The Shutdown Supplement is only for Windows 98 Second Edition. Do you have

that? Also, the Supplement is know to cause other problems. See:

http://aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm

http://aumha.org/win4/a/shtdwnse.htm

Installing the Supplement should be the last resort.

Re: Shutdown Supplement

Yes, I'm using Win 98 SE. And I always couldn't shut down properly. The

system very frequently got stuck at the big Windows logo and a message

stating that, "Windows is shutting down". Sometimes, the PC even display a

black screen with a cursor blinking somewhere in the middle (like a command

prompt). The only thing I can do now is to switch off the power. But when I

start the PC next time, the system will start to scan disk due to detected

improper shut down.

Re: Shutdown Supplement

That doesn't sound like the standard Shutdown problem. But read the articles

and before doing anything else, disable Fast Shutdown in MSCONFIG. Honestly,

yours doesn't sound like a problem that the Supplement will solve. You

should go through the entire troubleshooter, one step at a time.

Re: Shutdown Supplement

<thinking> I'm wondering if he might also need the IDE Hard Drive Cache update

(available at Windows Update as a non-critical update):

Re: Shutdown Supplement

Yup, could be... I always assume a fully updated system, including

Recommended Updates. Not a good assumption.
