I am stumped on this one - there are not many things that can go wrong with audio hardware or software wise.

Is the audio set to 2.1 in the windows audio?

control panel>sounds and audio device>advanced.

At a loss on this one I am afraid :(

can you try removing all the cables in the board again - run your fingers over the connectors and plug them back in - it must be a static issue - all I can think of.

Rob,

Do you have front and rear audio ports? If so, try the other.

I would also try another headphone set on it.

Failing that, I'd install a new audio card.

Thanks guys.

Yes I do have front and rear ports, and have swapped between them. As mentioned above the set now seems to work satisfactorily for normal chat use so am not too concerned about the anomaly between CP/Sounds and Accessories/Entertainment/Sound Recorder.

If I was trying to do serious recording and striking a problem then I would investigate further, but as that is not the case, so be it.

Thanks for all your suggestions.
