Guest rAgAv Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 Hi, I want detailed instructions on how to format system drive and reinstall XP with only the XP boot cd and no floppies. Anyway, what are the side-effects of a wrong install? Regards. -- rAgAv

You've been given the perfect link for your needs - but I would like to ask a couple of things: 1) Why do you feel the need to format/install Windows XP again? 2) Do you have all the drivers (hardware) for your system? I am unsure how you could have a 'wrong install'... -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
Guest davy Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 Re: HOw to reinstall xp with the cd... This should do it-: 'XP Clean Install' (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html) Make sure the CD rom is the first boot device and the hard drive is the 2nd boot device (HDD0 if a single drive), this is done in bios... unless it's a brand new drive then we don't need to do it. Insert the CD and reboot and thats it, from here on just follow on-screen prompts... when you get to the reboot stage, you'll see a red line and get a message "Your computer will reboot in xxx seconds" ensure that you remove the installation disc at this point or you'll go round in circles and reformat again and get no further.... ... we always want it booting from the hard drive from now on, we could go into bios now and set the hard drive back as the first boot device at this point, the rest can be disabled as we'll only be ever booting from the hard drive from now on. Thats it really, the screen will flash and jump and all you need to do is to follow the on screen prompts. Remember to ensure the hard drive is the first boot device when done. BEFORE YOU START... You'll need the mobo drivers and any other hardware drivers, these items should be installed after the operating system. A clean install is far better than doing a repair install as you are starting with a 'new slate'. Davy
Guest poatt Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 RE: HOw to reinstall xp with the cd... Too bad you don't have a floppy drive. They are cheap and will work on all OSs. If you don't have a floppy drive. Then download "BootIt NG" (it's free) to PC. Follow instructions and install on a CD. If you get this far then set boot sequence in MB Bios to boot from CDRom. When BootIt opens do not install but cancel the questions until you get to partition work. Here you can select the drive of OS and format it to wipe the OS off the drive. This should clean all data of previous OS. When formating I prefer to format "Fat32". XP works just fine on this file system. A Fat32fs is easier to work with,in these cases, then NTFS. Because you can use a 98SE boot disk to do disk work with Fat32 even after XP is installed. And can not if it is NTFS. Once the drive is formatted and clean. You can reboot machine with your XP CD in CDRom and follow instructions to install. If you are running a "RAID" system you will need A "CMOS driver boot disk" to load the RAID drivers before you can install XP. Be sure to have your XP code key and any necessary hardware drivers before any of this is started. Once reloaded and have an Internet connection register your copy of XP. It takes about 20 seconds on dial up. Then you can get the necessary XP updates from MS. For some reason updates do not work well without a registered OS. Good luck! You'll be offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the installation process.
