Cant use Microsoft Update as Windows Installer Package wont open. Google

search reveals that there are several WI's - 2.0, 3.0, etc. Should I try

downloading one of those and installing and if so , which one?

System Requirements:

Windows 2000 Service Pack 3; Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows Server 2003;

Windows XP; Windows XP Service Pack 1; Windows XP Service Pack 2

Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable supports Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 or

later, Windows XP, Windows XP Service Pack 1, Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows

Server 2003. Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 contains Windows Installer 3.1 and

therefore can't be installed or upgraded by this redistributable.

Re: Windows installer package wont work

Please give me a break. The attitude is directed at an extremely frustrating

and time consuming situation that I have been facing. I don't know why we

have to get sidetracked like this.

Re: Windows installer package wont work

Thankyou. However, one of the previous posts states that the Installer is an

integral part of SP2 and I can't download a replacement. So, which is

correct? (I am not an expert on this business so I don't want to mess things

up by trying to do something that will only make it worse).

RE: Windows installer package wont work

I was able to download Installer ....v2-x86.exe. I then opened it and got

message " you have successfully completed ...Setup Wizard".

I assume that it is installed. Is that correct? I then went to Windows

Update and after I accessed that site, it said "get the latest Windows Update

Software" . Tried but got message "install failed with error 0x80070020"

Thanks for your continued help.

Re: Windows installer package wont work

Did you try the download at the link I gave you? It doesn't use Windows

Update installer, it's a stand-alone installer. I've see cases where getting

the Installer 3.1 didn't work from Windows Updates but succeeded with the

stand-alone version.
