Guest Ken Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 I have an older computer equipped with W2000 and I have ACDSee Photo Program that I would like to copy to a slightly newer computer equipped with XP. I can't find my original installation disc that came with ACDSee. I have copied the file folder for ACDSee from the W2000 computer and placed a copy of the folder and contents on the desktop of the newer (XP) computer. Can I (how do I) install that program? Thanks for your help. Ken
Guest P. Di Stolfo Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 Re: how to install copy of a program without installation disc Hello, as far as I can see, it is impossible for ACDSee. In some cases, companies distribute their programs by downloads of trials where you can put in your serial and you'll have a fully functional program. What you tried is, too, not possible because the registry settings/program files in System folder etc. cannot be copied manually. I suggest that you to look for a free alternative for ACDSee. Hope this helps. Greetings, P. Guest Bert Kinney Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 Re: how to install copy of a program without installation disc Hi Ken, Most all application require an installation set to install. Coping files will most likely not work. You should contact ACDSee and tell them you lost the disk and need a replacement. http://www.acdsee.com/ Regards, Bert Kinney MS-MVP Shell/User http://bertk.mvps.org Member: http://dts-l.org Ken wrote: > I have an older computer equipped with W2000 and I have ACDSee Photo Program > that I would like to copy to a slightly newer computer equipped with XP. Double-click its icon. If the application starts, then it would not be difficult to install it into Windows XP. It can be done by opening Taskbar & Start Menu, then Advanced and Add...pretty intuitive. However, some more work might be required at re-building or re-establishing the folders and other shortcuts that might be involved. Note: Have no personal experience doing this with ACDSee Photo but this technique has worked well with other applications that are standalone or require minimal effort at registering into the Windows Registry.

I don't know this particular program, but in general, you can *not* do what you want. Except for an occasional very small program. all programs have many references pointers to them within Windows, in the registry and elsewhere. Without those references and pointers. the program won't work. So you can't just copy the executable file, or even the whole folder it's in. Since it's effectively impossible to find and copy all those many references, programs can never be moved from one computer to another; they have to be reinstalled from the original media. So unless your program is one of those small exceptions (which is unlikely) you're out of luck. -- Ken Blake - Microsoft MVP Windows: Shell/User Please reply to the newsgroup
