sean2390 Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 Hey all, I recently installed a 1000GB Samsung HDD which went fine but in the last few days instead of just one beep when booting I get two. The first one sounds normal but the second one is much louder. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 with 4GB RAM and XP Pro. Heres a link to the sound I here: http://thep2zone.com/misc/bootup.MP3 ~Sean Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 Hi Sean Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help What is the bios on that board and then we can try and trace the beeps? Quote
sean2390 Posted August 17, 2008 Author Posted August 17, 2008 BIOS is the latest one which is version FG AWARD BIOS Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 There may be some issues on using 4gb of ram on XP but I'll let our hardware expert advise further on that. Are you sure all mem and gpu are secure? Quote
sean2390 Posted August 17, 2008 Author Posted August 17, 2008 I did a rebuild last night. I thought it might have been that. I have a niggling feeling it might be my cpu fan, it looks slower than my brothers one which is the same stock AMD. My dad suggested that havin a side case fan infront of the cpu fan could be causing problem because the side fan is more powerful so the cpu fan is "riding" the air flow from the side fan and knackering it? Guest Wolfeymole Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 What do the board temperatures report? Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 A good program to find out if the bios gives limited info. SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer Quote

Guest Wolfeymole Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 My advice is to call back a little later Sean when our hardware tech is online mate and he will offer help on this. Quote
sean2390 Posted August 17, 2008 Author Posted August 17, 2008 Okay Dokie. Thanks for the help so far! :) Quote

Dalo Harkin Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 Hi Sean, It is difficult to diagnose Post code errors - but in your MOBO manual it should list them - If you use the MOBO on board thermal controls in the BIOS - they are far more accurate than software ones. Ok so 4GB RAM - all timings and refresh set to manufacturers specifications? are you overclocking at all? What speed CPU are you running - STOCK coolers are rubbish - they come with the cheapest kind of thermal paste already on them, I would advise getting the equivalent of an Arctic Freezer and some arctic silver 5 compound. Have a look at the MOBO thermal stats and come back to us please. sean2390 Posted August 18, 2008 Author Posted August 18, 2008 I checked the manual and it doesn't mention anything about the beep I am getting. I don't overclock anything. The only thing that is overclocked is my graphics card which came overclocked. I've had that about 2 months now and its been fine so I know its probably not that. My CPU is a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ running at stock 2.5Ghz. I'll post back in a min with the BIOS temps. Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 I would seriously consider getting another cooler - the Arctic Freezer one I highly recommend. Right chances are then the beep is due to excess heat being detected - there is a place in the BIOS for setting the fan speed and there is a monitoring section beside each fan and you can turn them on and off at will. Turn the CPU one off and see if the beeps disappear - *this will only get rid of the beeping and not the heat issue* for the heat issue look at an advanced cooler like the one above ;) Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
sean2390 Posted August 18, 2008 Author Posted August 18, 2008 righto, sorry for the delay, I had to peg out some washing! xD but my BIOS says the CPU temp is 33C and the CPU fan is at 1849RPM. I noticed that when i restart my PC, not shut down the 2nd beep doesn't occur. hmmm. BTW can you suggest a CPU cooler on eBuyer as I have some credit with them I can use to buy one. Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 Ok the beeps are due to heat being above the recommended limit that you or the MOBO suggest (if it's limited at 40 degrees, and it goes over this then the beep will sound) the same is true for the fan speed - it works on the same principle but if the speed is set at 2000rpm and it drops below that then again a beep will sound. you can uncheck the fans that are causing the beep, and as for the cooler Arctic Cooling (AC-FRZ-64P) Freezer64 Pro Socket 754 939 940 CPU Cooler with Heat pipe cooling Pro Ver - Ebuyer ;) Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
sean2390 Posted August 18, 2008 Author Posted August 18, 2008 nice price. I've jsut read a review on it and some people get concerned that the fan on that heatsink is mounted with rubber O.o and that it comes out of align easily. Any other heatsink you can suggest. Also that heatsink had its own thermal compound on. Is that alright to use or should i wipe it off and use another? Quote

LOL - they are mounted with rubber to keep the noise down - trust me they are fine - I have installed about 30 and not one has broke! (if you took the fan off and just used the heatsink on its own it would be cooler than the stock one  I kid you not) I would get arctic silver compound, the only other cooler I would use is the Tuniq tower but I am unsure if they do it for the AM2 socket. If you are wanting to keep the stock heatsink (not a good idea, then the least you can do is add the arctic silver compound) Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
sean2390 Posted August 18, 2008 Author Posted August 18, 2008 Right I'll get that heatsink, but am I understanding that I shouldn't use the thermal paste that comes pre applied on the new heatsink and use some I've bought? Quote
sean2390 Posted August 18, 2008 Author Posted August 18, 2008 Am guessing I should apply my own thermal compound from what I've read. Would this be suitable? Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal Compound - Ebuyer Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 (edited) Use this Arctic Silver 5 High-Density Polysynthetic Silver Thermal Compound Thermal paste 3.5gram - Ebuyer far better than the MX2 range. and as for the CPU - researches lastnight and the Scythe Mugen (Infinity) Socket 478, 754, 940, 775, 939 & AM2 CPU Cooler - Ebuyer is meant to be fantastic for AM2 socket - but in terms of price for the benefit - I persoanlly would still go for the Arctic Freezer Heatsink (with the rubber mounts) to let you know how good the Arctic Freezer Cooler is I had one on my Q6600 and at stock it runs at 2.4 per core with the Arctic Freezer I can OC' it to 3.3 per core and only have a 1 or 2 degree change in core temps. sean2390 Posted August 19, 2008 Author Posted August 19, 2008 That Scythe heatsink, looks like a hassle to get onto the board. cause I see no clips so am guessing that it would need to be screwed on! O.o I'll go for your choice in heatsink and that thermal paste. Can you tell me the best way of removing the existing paste off my CPU? I heard rubbing alcohol and some cotton buds are good but I never see any rubbing alcohol around. Another question aswell. I've got the 4800+ processor and was thinkin of going to the 6000+ processor. Would I be able to just swap the processors out since there in the same range or would I have to reinstall XP again? Quote
sean2390 Posted August 19, 2008 Author Posted August 19, 2008 The strange beep stops now since ive disabled Smart Fan Control which varies the speed of the fan according to temperature. I am still going to change the fan/heatsink but if anyone has this trouble in the future disabled the smart fan control subdues the 2nd loader beep. Quote
