Windows 2003 R2 - Add Device CALS

Recommended Posts

Just a quick and easy one. I have a windows 2003 R2 domain controller, the

only one in the domain. I have bought more device cals but not sure how to

add them.

I go to admin tools and select licensing, but it says the licensing server

isn't running.

I did read some where that windows 2003 turns this off.

I noticed in the service (License Logging) is disabled - is this correct?

If I start this service I can add windows server or back office

So where do I add the extra device cals?

Thanks

Hi Ian,

The License Manager in Windows has always been pretty flaky and thus pretty

useless. If you are NOT

running SBS 2003 then i would just keep the license manager service disabled

(by default 2003 should have installed with it disabled).

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316631/en-us Microsoft really just cares

now that you have the piece of paper to prove you have purchased licenses.

If however you are talking about the Terminal Server CALs, that is another

story.

Actually in re-reading your note, i think what you want is the Licensing

found in Control Panel.

Umm ok scrap that i had a dumb moment! -happens occationally. :-) Just

stick with my original reply.

MS Server 2003 can support up to something like 500,000 concurrent

connections, adding licenses to your server doesnt have an operational

effect, it would just be so that you could keep track of them for your own

records.

Unless we are talking about TS licenses...

Ok, No it's not for terminal server licensing. So really you just have the

piece of paper if the come knocking on your door?

licensing in the control panel this is just for our own tracking of

licensing? Well ok I won't install and just keep the licenses in the cupboard.

Thanks Coraleigh
