I have 3 Win 2003 servers - where do i put MOM 2005

Hi

The following 3 servers i do have (all latest updates)

1) Win 2003 Server with Exchange 2003 on it. All latest updates. (E-mail

server)

2) Win 2003 Server. Pastel is on it with its SQL database component.

3) Win 2003 Server. I'm setting up Portal 2003 on here. SQL Enterprise is

also installed here as Portal needs it

I need to install and configure MOM 2005. On which server should be the most

effective one. We do not have money for another box so it needs to go on one

of these boxes. I read in the notes that MOM 2005 needs SQL to be installed

with it. Seeing that 1) use a database of some sort as i understand it; 2)

has allready a SQL component installed and Pastel is VERY important in our

business so you don't want to stuff around there and 3) has allready SQL

installed where do i put MOM. Can i put it on 3 and point the program to use

the same SQL than what Portal does or is this not possible. Please help me

guys?

Hi MSExchangeStudent,

I would go for number 2 or 3 if you only have those machines, it they have

enough with hardware. You can install the MOM database on one server and

the management server on another machine. You can read more about that here

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/mom/mom2005/Library/b7b0c768-64d1-486e-b9ed-7292c9e545f9.mspx

Do i assume you mean by MOM database (the SQL server) and Management Server

(the MOM 2005 app).

Can i use the SQL that serve the Portal server to be the database for the

MOM program also or must it be a seperate database? No 3 has only 1GB of RAM

and a 1.4GHz CPU where no 2 is a much stronger server but it is the

dedicated file server of the company and PASTEL is also runing on there with

Pervasive SQL 9.6 database.

Thanks for your time!

Craig

Hi craig,

You can use Portal database if :

- Authentication is Windows mode

- version is SQL 2000

Regarding perfs, if you don't need reporting, it should be ok.

If you want to use reporting, you'll have to install SQL reporting services.

So , pay attention about web site (regarding your portal web site)

Hi Jeff,

I dont have to be SQL 2000, you can use SQL 2005 with SP1 if you have a MOM

2005 installation CD with MOM SP1.

Hi MSExchangeStudent,

From MOM point of view I belive that will work. But as always, make a backup

before you start changing anything.
