Guest pabeecroft@googlemail.com Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Good day to any geniuses out there. I have the following computer system: Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional CPU Type: AMD Athlon XP, 1800 MHz (13.5 x 133) 2200+ Motherboard Name: Soltek SL-75FRV(-L) (5 PCI, 1 AGP, 3 DIMM, Audio) Motherboard Chipset: VIA VT8377 Apollo KT400 System Memory: 1024 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM) BIOS Type: AMI (12/30/02) Video Adapter: RADEON 9000 Series (64 MB) Disk Drive: Maxtor 6Y080L0 (80 GB, 7200 RPM, Ultra-ATA/ 133) Upon booting this system first time round there appears the message "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM". The system then requires restarting (with the restart button) and in most cases windows begins to load, Victory! one cries but alas no just after the windows logo a BSOD appears in one flavour or another sometime BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO, sometimes DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, sometimes naming drivers sometimes not. My PC will finally boot up third or fourth time round. I know what the first shout is going to be: Check the memory, check the harddrive, check the harware configuration. I have run the mighty memtest for what seems like days and not a single error has been detected, I have removed each memory module in turn placing them in various DIMM slots only to find the same error occurs (I find it hard to believe both of my newely acquired memory modules are faulty), so not a memory issue. I have run seagate's SeaTools bootable program to thoroughly test the harddrive, no problems there (excpet it whinges about drive overtemp of 253 but the drive is hugely ventilated and not even slightly warm to the touch I'm guessing this is as there is not temperature sensor in this model). I have removed all non essential hardware and replaced it bit by bit. All to encounter the same problem. I think it may have somthing to do with my windows, ANY CLUES ANYBODY many thanks Peter
Guest Patti MacLeod Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 RE: startup issues Hi Peter, Check out this MSKB article: How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/ **Take note of the Warning in the SUMMARY section before performing the actions described** Also, if the install CD that you have is a Recovery or Restore CD provided by a computer manufacturer, that will not work to perform the repair.....contact the computer manufacturer's tech support in order to find out the best method for resolving the problem. Guest pabeecroft@googlemail.com Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 Re: startup issues Patti Thanks for your suggestions, after initially kicking myself for not attempting roll-back I discovered that it did not work anyway. The next problem is that I do not have my original windows xp disk, which the rest of the suggestions require. So is it a case of new installation? buying windows xp or installing something else like the mighty fedora (which I have always secretly wanted to try). Cheers Peter
Guest =?Utf-8?B?UGF0dGkgTWFjTGVvZA==?= Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 Re: startup issues If your system has a floppy drive, you could use the setup floppy disks in order to access the Recovery Console, which the procedure requires. You can d/load the file to create the set of six floppy disks from here: How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994 Ensure that you d/load the file that is appropriate for your current operating system and service pack. If you would prefer to buy Windows XP or install Fedora instead, then by all means, do so. If you have the proof of purchase for the original XP disk, you could look into obtaining a replacement disk from the Microsoft Supplemental Parts team: How to replace Microsoft software or hardware, order service packs and product upgrades, or replace product manuals http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326246 Regards, -- Patti MacLeod Microsoft MVP - Windows Shell/User "pabeecroft@googlemail.com" wrote: > Patti > > Thanks for your suggestions, after initially kicking myself for not > attempting roll-back I discovered that it did not work anyway.
