Windows goes into reboot loop after installing SP2

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have just installed XP Pro onto a basic workstation and it loaded ok.

However, after I installed SP2, the pc goes into a constant reboot and the

only way out of it, is to boot to safe mode, uninstall SP2 and then it works

again.

I need to get the system upgraded so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Here are a couple of things to try:

Click Start, Run, type SFC /SCANNOW, click OK. If any files are damaged

or missing, they'll be replaced. You may need to reboot afterwards so

damaged files will be replaced.

Is SP2 on a CD or is it a download? If a download, try a fresh copy; it

could be a damaged copy.

Thanks for the tips Jo - the scan did not show any problems.

SP2 was a download so I will get it again and see if it makes any difference.

Begining to think it may be hardware/driver issue but as it works with no SP

it is puzzling me somewhat.

Look in the Event Log to see if anything is recorded. Change the

AutoReboot behavior so that you can get a bugcheck error message (blue

screen) instead of a continuous reboot loop. From the bugcheck error

message you may be able to identify the problem. Look in the System

Properties Advanced Options to change the automatically reboot on

failure option.

Re: Windows goes into reboot loop after installing SP2

Error reported is as follows:

STOP : C0000221 Unknown Hardware error

\systemroot\system32\NTDLL.DLL

I restored the NTDLL.DLL file but to no avail.

Also found and updated other drivers i.e. graphics and network but still the

same.

Guess this pc is not designed for XP (its a P4 intel 1.8 cpu)

Re: Windows goes into reboot loop after installing SP2

I'm running XP Pro SP2 and I can only start my machine in Safe Mode too.

This started about the 20th and I've spent hours on the phone first with

DELL and then Microsoft.

Funny how all this came about when Microsoft's WMA server started get funky.

All DELL can tell me is to back-up what you can, reformat the hard drive,

reinstall the OS and all drivers and all software and programs with their

serial numbers.

Does ANYONE know what a PAIN this is?

I called MSFT customer service and spent an entire day with them too and

they can't figure it out.

Sorry to say but MSFT has dropped the ball here. I'd bet my last dollar

that my PC can only boot in safe mode due to a WMA issue or the new KEYS

needed for XP.

As a small business owner who paid through the nose for XP, Office I'm

really mad.
